FH: Spenard scores but USM nips Panthers

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Sydney Spenard (Manchester, N.H.) scored and classmate Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) had 15 saves, but the University of Southern Maine offense was too much as the Huskies defeated Plymouth State University, 3-1, in a Little East Conference field hockey matchup at Hannaford Field on Wednesday evening.

The hosts got on the board twice in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead. The Panthers' offense took over in the second quarter, outshooting USM 14-4 in the frame. The Huskies' defense and goalkeeper shined, though, to keep PSU off the board. Southern Maine would tack on another goal to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the third quarter Spenard knocked in a loose ball off a scrum following a penalty corner to get the Panthers on board. The USM offense continued to pressure, but Antonucci stood tall once again to keep the game close before the Huskies finished out the game with a 3-1 victory.
