MH: Seidl scores game-winner as Panthers rally past Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior Marcus Seidl (Stockholm, Sweden) scored with just 5:30 remaining in the third period as Plymouth State University rallied from an 0-2 deficit to top Plattsburgh State University, 3-2, in the men's ice hockey season opener at Stafford Arena on Friday night.

Plattsburgh got out to a quick lead with a goal just 37 seconds into play and the hosts made it 2-0 early in the second before Plymouth State started the comeback. Sophomore Jeromey Rancourt (Lewiston, Maine) cut the deficit in half midway through the second period and junior Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) pulled the Panthers even early in the third to set up Seidl's game-winner.

Plymouth State starts the year at 1-0, while the Cardinals fall to 0-1.

Three Stars: How it Happened:
  • The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with a goal just 37 seconds into play and the hosts made it 2-0 less than three minutes into the second period.
  • Junior Ted Austin (Sylvania, Ohio) played a long pass through the neutral zone and off the boards to send Rancourt in alone as PSU cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 10:24 mark of the middle stanza.
  • Plattsburgh attempted to dump the puck in, but Abbate blocked the pass at the blue line and skated in alone before beating the Cardinals' goalie to far post to tie game 5:21 into the third.
  • Senior Grant DeWitt (Bowling Green, Ohio) won a 50-50 puck on end boards behind the Plattsburgh goal and found Seidl at the left faceoff circle. Seidl snapped a wrister to the top right corner to put the Panthers ahead with 5:30 remaining and PSU was able to hold on for the win..
By the Numbers:
  • Sophomore Kalle Andersson (Taby, Sweden) made a career-high 37 saves, including 30 in the second and third periods alone, to pick up the win.
  • In addition to his goal, Rancourt won 12-of-15 faceoff opportunities.
  • Neither team was able to convert on the power play. The Panthers were 0-for-4, while Plattsburgh came up empty over five chances.
  • Austin had a pair of assists, while senior Simon Besner (North Lancaster, Ontario) and DeWitt tallied an assist apiece.
  • It was just the second meeting between the two teams. The Cardinals won the previous matchup during the 2005-06 season.
