NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Sophomore
Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 37 saves, but #7 Norwich University was too strong for Plymouth State University, topping the Panthers 6-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at Kreitzberg Arena on Friday night.
The built a 2-0 lead behind a pair of first period goals, but Plymouth State cut into the margin when junior
Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) made a great play behind the Norwich goal to knock the puck loose, then slipped a perfect feed to sophomore
Carsen Moffett (Kamloops, British Columbia) in front to make it 2-1.
The Cadets rallied to close the period with two more goals, though, then added two tallies to close out the game in the third period. Norwich is ranked #7 in the nation in this week's USCHO national poll.
Plymouth State falls to 2-2-1 (0-1-0 NEHC), while Norwich improves to 3-1-0 (3-0-0 NEHC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, Norwich 6
- Plymouth State (2-2-1, 0-1-0 NEHC)
- Norwich (3-1-0, 3-0-0 NEHC)
How it Happened:
- Norwich got on the board with a power play goal at 5:05 of the opening period.
- The hosts doubled the lead four minutes later when a Cadet made a pair of moves around the PSU defense before firing a shot to the top left corner.
- During a PSU power play late in the period, junior Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) skated in on the right side for a 2-on-1 break with senior Zoe Killisch (Kitzbuhel, Austria) on the weak side, but Hamilton's shot was turned aside.
- The Panthers cut the deficit in half at the 10:53 mark of the middle period when Thomas stole the puck behind the Norwich goal and flipped a pass to Moffett, who beat the Cadets' goaltender high to the glove side.
- Norwich got a lucky break when a shot deflected off a defender's stick to make it 3-1 at 12:22, and the Cadets added another with 2:42 left in the second before tacking on two insurance markers in the final period.
By the Numbers:
- Julian's 37 saves were the second-highest total of her career, and the most in a regulation game. She turned aside 40 shots in an overtime win at Castleton to close out last spring's COVID-shortened season.
- The Cadets held a 43-13 advantage in shots.
- Hamilton and freshman Emily DeSimone (Walpole, Mass.) each won more than half of their faceoff draws.
- PSU blocked 15 shots, just four shy of the season high, with DeSimone blocking a team-high five.
- Norwich has won 53 straight conference games.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State remains in NEHC play tomorrow (Nov. 13) with a 3:00 p.m. contest at New England College.
