Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Asst. Director of Communications for Athletics

MH: Brawley, Panthers blank Anna Maria

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) made 32 saves to record his first career shutout as Plymouth State University knocked off Anna Maria College, 2-0, in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink on Saturday night.

Anna Maria came out firing, but Brawley was up to the task and the Panthers got on the board midway through the opening period when graduate student Peter Laviolette (Longboat Key, Fla.) picked up his first of the season. Clinging to a one-goal advantage, Brawley came up big time and time again and PSU finally got some breathing room when junior Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) lit the lamp just 14 seconds into the third.

During the first intermission the women's cross country team was honored during an on-ice ceremony to celebrate the program's first Little East Conference (LEC) title last weekend.

Plymouth State improves to 2-1-0, while Anna Maria dips to 0-2-2.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, Anna Maria 0
    • Plymouth State (2-1-0)
    • Anna Maria (0-2-2)
How it Happened:
  • Anna Maria had an early chance with a 2-on-1 break less than two minutes in but Brawley kicked the shot away.
  • The AMCATS continued to pressure through the period and had multiple chances during a power play opportunity but senior Ben Chipman (North Vancouver, British Columbia) blocked a shot and Brawley covered up a loose puck in front to keep the game scoreless.
  • Plymouth State got on the board at 11:05 when senior Colin Stevens (Concord, N.H.) blasted a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that was redirected in by Laviolette.
  • Anna Maria nearly pulled even four minutes into the middle period, but Brawley made a huge save and graduate student JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) blocked a follow up shot.
  • Eight minutes later PSU had a golden chance to double its lead when junior Ted Austin (Sylvania, Ohio) whipped a quick wrister during a 3-on-2, but AMCATS' goaltender Brendan Boncore (Oakland, Mich.) was up to the challenge.
  • Boncore came up huge again with five minutes left in the second period when crisp tic-tac-toe passing found PSU senior Simon Besner (North Lancaster, Ontario) alone in front to keep the score 1-0 heading into the third period.
  • The Panthers tacked on an insurance goal just 14 seconds into the third when Barone found junior Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) in the slot and his one-timer beat Boncore high to the glove side.
  • Anna Maria had a pair 2-on-1 shorthanded chances in the third period, but Brawley came out to cover up the first one before making a brilliant kick save on the second and the Panthers held on for the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Brawley's 32 saves were the second most of his career. He had 20 saves in the first period alone.
  • His counterpart, Boncore, stopped 37 shots.
  • Plymouth State held a 58-47 edge in shots.
  • PSU went 1-for-3 on the power play while holding the AMCATS scoreless on four chances.
  • Laviolette's goal was the 25th of his career, while Abbate's tally was his 26th.
Up Next:
  • PSU kicks off the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) schedule next Thursday (Nov. 11) with a Salute the Troops game against Westfield State University at Hanaway Rink. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
