MH: Panthers late rally falls short at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – Plymouth State University scored a pair of third period goals but was unable to notch the equalizer as the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision at New England College in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Lee Clement Arena on Saturday afternoon.
 
NEC built a 3-0 lead through the first two periods, but sophomore Jeromey Rancourt (Lewiston, Maine) and graduate student JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) pulled the Panthers to within one with third period tallies. PSU pressured late and Barone had a chance at a game-tying goal with the extra skater on the ice in the final minute, but the Pilgrims got a key blocked shot to hold on for the win.
 
Plymouth State dips to 8-3-1 to close the fall semester, while NEC improves to 7-2-1.

How it Happened:
  • NEC wasted little time getting on the board just 59 seconds into the game.
  • The Pilgrims added a pair of goals in the middle period to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Plymouth State had a chance to cut into the lead during a five-minute power play, but the Pilgrims were able to keep PSU off the board.
  • The Panthers got one back at 5:24 of the third when Rancourt skated into the zone before whipping a wrist shot to the top left corner from the point.
  • PSU made it a one-goal game with 7:31 remaining when Barone batted home a rebound during a 5-on-3 power play.
  • With the extra skater, PSU applied heavy pressure over the final minute, but a pair of huge saves by the goaltender and a blocked shot off Barone's game-tying bid were enough to allow the hosts to hold on.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU outshot the Pilgrims by a 54-36 margin.
  • The Panthers were 1-of-6 on the power play, while NEC went 0-for-5.
  • Junior Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) made 33 saves in the losing effort.
  • Rancourt and Barone share the team lead with nine goals apiece.
