WBB: Furious fourth quarter rally not enough as Panthers fall in LEC opener

DANBURY, Conn. – After trailing by as many as 34 points, the Plymouth State University women's basketball team mounted a furious comeback bid that ultimately fell just short as the Panthers dropped the Little East Conference (LEC) opener at Western Connecticut State University, 67-57, at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The story came in the fourth quarter, where PSU routed WestConn by a 28-6 margin, allowing only one field goal during the frame. Unfortunately, the early deficit was too great as the Panthers' comeback attempt came up just short.

Junior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) led all scorers with 18 points, with nine coming in the fourth quarter.  Sophomore Sabrina Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) added 13 points of her own (ten in the fourth) in the losing effort.

Plymouth State falls to 1-4 (0-1 LEC) on the season, while WestConn improves to 6-2 (1-0 LEC).

The Basics:

Top Performers: How it Happened:

  • PSU cut the deficit to seven with 6:37 left in the second with a Cook jump shot from fifteen feet, the closest the Panthers would come.
  • The hosts went back to the inside and closed out the half with a 37-18 advantage.
  • WestConn started the third quarter where they left off, taking a 10-2 advantage in the opening two minutes to extend the lead to 61-29 by the end of three.
  • The Panthers commanded the fourth quarter, outscoring their counterparts 28-6 while only allowing one field goal, but the early deficit proved insurmountable.

  • PSU outrebounded WestConn 19-9 on the offensive glass.
  • The hosts led for all but 16 seconds of the game.
  • Plymouth's 28-point fourth quarter was the most in any quarter since the 2017-18 season when the Panthers posted 28 and 29-point frames in the same game against WestConn.
