MH: Seidl’s power play strike lifts Panthers over Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. – Sophomore Marcus Seidl (Stockholm, Sweden) notched his first goal of the year, a power play strike five minutes into the third period, to snap a scoreless deadlock and lift Plymouth State University to a 2-0 win over Anna Maria College in a men's ice hockey game at Horgan Arena on Saturday night.

Freshman Kalle Andersson (Taby, Sweden) made 21 saves to earn his first career win and shutout.

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State got off to a sluggish start, as the Panthers were whistled for five penalties in the opening 20 minutes. The AMCATS outshot PSU by a 13-11 margin, but Andersson was up to the challenge.
  • PSU took control in the second, limiting the hosts to just three shots while pummeling the Anna Maria goaltender with 26 attempts, but the game remained scoreless heading into the third period.
  • Seidl snapped the tie with just 11 seconds left in the power play to give PSU the advantage at the 6:59 mark.
  • Less than two minutes later sophomore Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) lit the lamp to give the Panthers some breathing room, and Andersson kept the AMCATS off the board to earn the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Plymouth State finished with a 52-21 edge in shots.
  • The Panthers went 1-of-7 on the power play despite firing 21 shots with the man advantage. Anna Maria finished 0-for-5 with five shots.
  • Abbate's tally was his first of the year after leading the team with 16 goals during his Rookie of the Year campaign last winter.
  • Junior Mike McPherson (Somerville, Mass.) and freshman Nick Poirier (Blainville, Quebec) picked up assists for the Panthers. Poirier's point was the first of his collegiate career.
Up Next:
  • The two teams meet up again next weekend for another home-and-home series. Plymouth State hosts the AMCATS on Friday (Feb. 19) at 4:00 p.m., before heading back to Massachusetts the following day (Feb. 20) for a 5:40 p.m. puck drop.
