Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Asst. Director of Communications for Athletics

WH: Panthers sweep weekend series over NEC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – For the second straight day Plymouth State University jumped out to an early lead, this time scoring a trio of goals in the opening frame, as the Panthers blanked New England College, 4-0, in a women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday morning.

PSU scored an early goal again, though not quite as fast as the ten seconds needed last night, as freshman Marissa Pickman (Bradford, N.H.) notched her first career tally just over two minutes into the game. The Panthers added two more before the stanza ended.

Plymouth State peppered the opposing goaltender all game, racking up 50 shots to the Pilgrims' 11. Over the two series PSU outshot NEC by a 95-24 margin.

With the win the Panthers sweep the weekend and improve to 2-0-0, while NEC drops to 0-2-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 4, New England College 0
    • Plymouth State (2-0-0)
    • New England College (0-2-0)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Pickman got the Panthers off to a good start when her shot from the top of the right circle beat the NEC goaltender through the five-hole just 2:09 into play.
  • The Panthers struck again just over six minutes later as junior Georgia McLellan (Kamloops, British Columbia) scored from nearly the same spot on the power play. Her wrist shot made it through traffic and tucked just inside the far post for a 2-0 lead at the 8:36 mark.
  • Freshman Carsen Moffett (Kamloops, British Columbia) capped the first period scoring with her first career tally with just over a minute remaining. Classmate Isabella Borbridge (Calgary, Alberta) blasted a slapshot from the point and Moffett cleaned up the rebound at 18:59.
  • NEC's best scoring opportunity came down a skater midway through the second period. With the Pilgrims on the penalty kill, sophomore Mikayla Vincent (Newburyport, Mass.) picked off a pass in her defensive zone and skated in alone, but freshman Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) came out to cut down the angle and Vincent's shot soared over the crossbar.
  • Plymouth State tacked on a short-handed score later in the period when sophomore Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) stole a pass at the blue line and took off on a breakaway. Junior Siri Brett (Wenatchee, Wash.) took a hack at the rebound and Streed corralled the loose puck and stuffed it into the nearside post on a wraparound with 1:22 left in the fame.
  • PSU held the Pilgrims without a shot over the final 20 minutes to secure the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Julian finished with 11 saves to earn her first career win (1-0-0), while junior Cianna Weir (Olds, Alberta) stopped 46 shots but fell to 0-2-0.
  • Brett has four points through her first two games, while junior Zoe Killisch (Vienna, Austria) leads the team with 13 shots.
  • PSU finished the day 1-of-6 on the power play, while holding the Pilgrims scoreless in three attempts.
  • The win is the Panthers' ninth straight victory over NEC. PSU moves to 2-0 for the first time in program history.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State squares off with powerhouse Norwich University in next weekend's series. The Panthers visit Kreitzberg Arena on Friday (Feb. 19) at 5:00 p.m., before hosting the Cadets on Saturday (Feb. 20).
