WH: Moffett tallies goal as Panthers drop finale

CASTLETON, Vt. – Freshman Carsen Moffett (Kamloops, British Columbia) potted her second goal of the season, but Castleton University used four straight scores to spoil Plymouth State University's season finale, 4-1, in a women's ice hockey game at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After needing more than 62 minutes for either team to find the back of the net last night, Moffett gave the Panthers a first period lead after converting a perfect feed from sophomore Addie Swanson (Anchorage, Alaska). Castleton rallied to tie the score late in the frame, then went on to add three additional goals over the final two periods to secure the win.

With the setback Plymouth State ends the COVID-shortened season with a 3-4-1 record, while the Spartans move to 6-5-1.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Castleton 4
    • Plymouth State (3-4-1)
    • Castleton (6-5-1)
How it Happened:
  • Junior Kassidy Lyons (Upper Blackville, New Brunswick) snagged a loose puck in the neutral zone and flipped it up ice to Swanson, who made a move around a defender before sliding a perfect feed to Moffett on the far post. Moffett's backhander easily beat the Castleton goaltender to give PSU a 1-0 lead at 9:38.
  • The Spartans came back with just under two minutes remaining in the frame as freshman Julia Carpenter (Plymouth, Mich.) redirected a shot just seconds after Plymouth State killed a penalty.
  • Castleton took the lead just 2:15 into the second period when sophomore Darby Palisi (Concord, N.H.) scored on a one-on-one, and the hosts added a power play tally two minutes later.
  • Castleton added an insurance goal with three minutes remaining in the third to put the game away.
By the Numbers:
  • Junior Olivia Petito (St. Augustine, Fla.) made 24 saves in the setback to fall to 1-2-1.
  • The Panthers were outshot by a 28-17 margin after the Spartans blasted 14 shots on goal in the first period.
  • PSU had ample opportunities on the power play but finished the afternoon 0-for-9. Castleton went 1-of-3 with the skater advantage.
Up Next:
  • The game marks the end of Plymouth State's COVID-shortened season under first-year head coach Josh Funk.
