WTEN: Panthers roll over Castleton

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University dropped just four games in singles play on the way to a commanding, 9-0 win over Castleton University in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House on Saturday.

PSU opened the day with an impressive performance in doubles play before overwhelming the Spartans in singles play to earn the sweep. Plymouth State has not surrendered a point in its two wins this season.

With the victory the Panthers improve to 2-1 (2-1 LEC), while Castleton falls to 0-2 (0-2 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 9, Castleton 0
    • Plymouth State (2-1, 2-1 LEC)
    • Castleton (0-2, 0-2 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Senior Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) faced Castleton's toughest challenge at No. 1 doubles, but still coasted to an 8-2 win.
  • Seniors Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2, while junior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles.
  • Venincasa (No. 3 singles), Sundquist (No. 4 singles) and junior Brie Hada (Alton, N.H.), playing at No. 6 singles, didn't give up a game as all three were dominant in 6-0, 6-0 wins.
  • Winter and Miller, playing at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, each posted 6-0, 6-1 straight set wins, while McCarthy toppled her challenger at No. 1 by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.
By the Numbers:
  • The win was PSU's fifth straight over the Spartans and the ninth in the last ten meetings.
  • Miller and Puzio picked up their first true doubles win of the season as the duos' previous win came by forfeit.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State is scheduled to host the University of Southern Maine on April 20, though the last meeting between the two teams was canceled because the Huskies did not have enough players to field a team.
