WTEN: Panthers cruise past WestConn

Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman Sarah Asciutto (Manchester, Vt.) picked up her first career win to help Plymouth State University top Western Connecticut State University, 9-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at Westside Courts on Saturday.

Paired together for the first time, Asciutto and junior Brie Hada (Alton, N.H.) held off their opponents for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to help PSU sweep pairs play. The Panthers rolled through singles action with nobody dropping more than three games in a set.

Plymouth State sweeps the season series from the Colonials without surrendering a point to run its record to 3-1 (3-1 LEC). WestConn falls to 1-4 (1-4 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 9, Western Conn. St. 0
    • Plymouth State (3-1, 3-1 LEC)
    • Western Conn. St. (1-4, 1-4 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Senior Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) coasted to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, with senior Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) and junior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) teaming up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.
  • Asciutto and Hada increased the PSU lead to 3-0 after staving off the competition for an 8-5 win at No. 3 pairs.
  • McCarthy went 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, with Winter earning the victory at No. 2 by a 6-3, 6-1 margin.
  • Sundquist toppled her opponent at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3), while Miller went 6-0, 6-3 to win at No. 4.
  • Hada (6-1, 6-1) and Asciutto (6-1, 6-0) closed out the sweep with victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU blanked the Colonials earlier this spring and has won each of the last 12 meetings dating back to October 2011.
  • The shutout was the Panthers' fifth in its 12-match winning streak against WCSU.
  • All three of PSU's wins this spring have been by a 9-0 score.
Up Next:
  • PSU hosts the University of Southern Maine in a rare double header on Thursday (Apr. 29). The first match will be played to decision starting with doubles action, while the second will open with singles play.
