SB: Bryan’s walk-off hit leads to dramatic sweep of WestConn

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Vanessa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.) poked a two-out, bases-loaded single just out of reach of the Western Connecticut State University second baseman to lead Plymouth State University to a 5-4 walk-off win in game two of a non-conference softball double header at D&M Park on Sunday afternoon.

Plymouth State won the opener in five innings, 9-1, behind the bat of junior Emily Picard (Berlin, N.H.) and a strong start from graduate student Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.).

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning of game two, but WestConn struck for four runs, including a two-out, three-run double, to take the lead. With two down in the bottom of the frame, PSU put together four straight singles and Bryan, down to her final strike, came through with the clutch, game-winning hit.

Plymouth State has won five straight and nine-of-ten to move to 9-5, while the Colonials drop to 2-8.

The Basics:
  • Game 1: Plymouth State 9, Western Conn. St. 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Game 2: Plymouth State 5, Western Conn. St. 4
    • Plymouth State (9-5)
    • Western Conn. St. (2-8)

How it Happened (Game One):
  • Plymouth State got on the board in the bottom of the first when freshman Alexis Michon (Montville, Conn.) ripped a one-out triple to the right centerfield gap and Picard followed with an RBI groundout.
  • WestConn came right back in the top of the second. The Colonials had a run cut down at the plate after a perfect relay from Michon to Picard, but the following batter lofted a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 1-1.
  • PSU went back in front in the third. Senior Mina Shaw (Mars, Pa.) led off with a bunt single and after a ground out, a hit batter put two runners on. Picard smashed a ground-rule double to left center to score a run and after a walk loaded the bases freshman Jersey Strum (Somersworth, N.H.) knocked a run-scoring single to center.
  • Junior Katie Burk (East Islip, N.Y.) followed with a nubber up the first base line to score another run and a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Kacie Johnston (Campton, N.H.) made it 5-1.
  • PSU put the game away in the fifth inning. Strum drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Bryan knocked in another after a WestConn error and Shaw's bunt single made it 8-1. Another Colonials' misplay allowed Bryan to score to end the game after five innings.
By the Numbers (Game One):
  • Picard finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Strum also drove in two, while Burk and Shaw both had two-hit games.
  • Picard threw out two attempted base stealers.
  • Miller improved to 4-3 after scattering seven hits while giving up just one run. She struck out two.

How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Plymouth State threatened in the first as three straight walks loaded the bases with one out, but the Colonials got out of the jam with a strikeout and fielder's choice.
  • The Panthers got on the board in the second when Michon came up with a clutch, two-out single to score junior Niah Colby (Lunenburg, Vt.) and freshman Abby Kenison (Boscawen, N.H.).
  • Meanwhile, Michon was dealing in the circle, allowing just two singles over the first six innings while racking up nine strikeouts.
  • WestConn opened the seventh with a triple and a bloop hit cut the deficit to 2-1. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position. PSU issued an intentional walk and Colby made a nice running catch on a foul popup for the second out, but a hit batter loaded the bases and the next hitter cleared the bags with a booming double to put the visitors ahead, 4-2.
  • With one down in the bottom of the inning Shaw reached on an infield hit, but she was erased on a fielder's choice by Michon. Michon stole second and came home on Picard's base hit to pull within 4-3. Sophomore Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.) and Johnston followed with loud singles to left to load the bases.
  • Bryan fouled off the first two pitches but slapped the 0-2 offering just out of reach of the WestConn second baseman to drive in the game-tying and game-winning runs.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
  • Michon, who gave up just five hits, finished the game with 10 strikeouts and improved to 5-2. She has struck out 10+ batters in each of her last three home starts.
  • She also went 1-for-3 with a walk at the plate, scoring a run and driving in two.
  • Eight of PSU's nine starters had singles, with Bryan coming up with the biggest hit of the day.
  • Plymouth State played error-free softball in both games, while the Colonials committed seven errors on the day.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State heads to the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (Apr. 20) for a non-conference twin bill.
