WTEN: Panthers take two from Southern Maine

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team won both ends of a rare double header, topping the University of Southern Maine, 5-0 and 5-0, in a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) matches at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House on Thursday afternoon.
 
Playing both conference matches on the same day in order to complete LEC play in advance of next week's LEC Tournament, the Panthers won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and picked up three victories by forfeit as the day's first match opened with pairs play.
 
The second match started with singles action, where PSU earned wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, coupled with a pair of forfeits to sweep the day.
 
Plymouth State improves to 5-1 (5-1 LEC), while Southern Maine falls to 0-7 (0-7 LEC).

How it Happened (Match One):
  • Seniors Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) took No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) joined forces to take No. 2 doubles, 8-0.
  • With just four players on the roster, USM was forced to forfeit No. 3 doubles and two of the six singles spots.
How it Happened (Match Two):
  • Opening with singles play, PSU immediately took a 2-0 lead as USM forfeited No. 5 and No. 6.
  • Senior Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) swept No. 1 (6-0, 6-1), while sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.
  • Junior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 to secure the victory.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU has won each of the last 12 meetings and 17-of-18 dating back to the 2004 season.
  • Plymouth State hasn't allowed a team point in any of its five wins.
  • The Panthers have won four straight matches.
