PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Andrew Wasilefsky (Willington, Conn.) had a huge day at the plate to lead Plymouth State University to a sweep of Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) double header at Parish Field on Saturday.
Wasilefsky went 3-for-3 with a double and homer while driving in five runs as PSU took the opener, 13-3, in seven innings. In the nightcap he added a 2-for-4 performance with a double, triple, three runs scored and three more RBI.
With the sweep Plymouth State improves to 8-7 (4-5 LEC), while the Colonials move to 2-12 and 2-11 in LEC play.
The Basics:
- Game 1: Plymouth State 13, Western Conn. St. 3 (7 Inn.)
- Game 2: Plymouth State 11, Western Conn. St. 4
- Plymouth State (8-7, 4-5 LEC)
- Western Conn. St. (2-12, 2-11 LEC)
How it Happened (Game One):
- Graduate student James Salta (Laconia, N.H.) sparked a two-out rally in the first with a walk. Sophomore Griffin Crane (Lancaster, N.H.) followed with a base hit and Wasilefsky gave PSU a 1-0 lead with a double to right.
- WestConn came right back with a three-spot in the second to pull in front.
- PSU retook the lead in the third. Junior Drew Metzdorf (Burlington, Mass.) tripled and came home on J. Salta's RBI ground out. Crane followed with a single and Wasilefsky launched his third homer of the year over the high fence in right.
- The Panthers extended the lead in the fourth with a run coming home on a WestConn throwing error and Metzdorf singling home a another. J. Salta added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 7-3.
- Plymouth State put the game out of reach in the fifth. Senior Joe Routhier (Nashua, N.H.) singled, stole a base and moved up on a wild pitch and graduate student Andrew Salta (Laconia, N.H.) walked and stole second. Both runners came around to score on a single from Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.). After the second out, J. Salta singled in a run, Crane followed with a base hit and Wasilefsky plated two more runs with a double to make it 12-3.
- Sokolski's RBI single in the sixth pushed the advantage to 13-3 and the Colonials went down in order in the seventh.
By the Numbers (Game One):
- Wasilefsky had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer and a walk while driving in five.
- Sokolski (three singles), Metzdorf (two singles, triple) and Crane (three singles) also had three-hit games, while Routhier went 2-for-4.
- Sophomore Braxton Brown (Lancaster, N.H.) picked up his first win of the season (1-0), needing just 87 pitches to throw the complete game. Over his 7.0 innings he allowed just three runs on six hits and struck out two without a walk. After WestConn scored three in the second, he allowed just three singles the rest of the way.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- The Panthers loaded the bases in the first without the benefit of a hit and Wasilefsky continued his big day at the dish with a two-run double. Junior Brody Fillion (Littleton, N.H.) knocked in a run with a groundout and graduate student Gavin Cook (Littleton, N.H.) doubled home another for a quick 4-0 lead.
- WestConn got a run back in the second, but the Panthers put up another four-spot in the second. A. Salta singled, moved up on a wild pitch and took third on an error. Sokolski walked and Metzdorf drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Two more walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch pushed the lead to 6-1 before a Colonials' error allowed two more runners to score.
- WCSU got another run back on a balk in the third and the score would remain 8-2 until Fillion socked a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
- Wasilefsky drove in yet another run with an RBI triple to score J. Salta in the sixth, then Fillion's single pushed the PSU lead to 11-2.
- The Colonials added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but the game was already out of reach at that point.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
- Wasilefsky added another two hits (double, triple), walked, scored three runs and drove in three.
- Fillion (single, homer) and A. Salta (two singles) also had multi-hit games.
- Sophomore Richie Marique (Derry, N.H.) had his best start of the year, going 6.0 and allowing just two runs. He struck out seven.
- Freshman Sam Dyckman (Pembroke, Mass.) picked up his first career save in relief.
