WTEN: Panthers heading back to LEC title match after win over Castleton

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Second-seeded Plymouth State University flew past third-seed Castleton University, 5-0, in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Tennis Tournament at Bank of New Hampshire Field House at ALLWell North on Thursday afternoon.
 
Plymouth State (7-2) advances to the championship match for the second time in the last three years and third time in school history. The Panthers will face top-seeded Rhode Island College in the title game, looking to deny the Anchorwomen a fourth-straight championship.
 
Castleton ends its season with a 1-7 mark.

How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State got three quick points in doubles play as senior Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 1.
  • Seniors Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) coasted to an 8-0 win at No. 2, while sophomore Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) joined forces with freshman Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) for an 8-1 win at No. 3.
  • Venincasa won No. 4 singles in straight sets without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0), and Winter closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
By the Numbers:
  • The Panthers have won seven consecutive matches against Castleton and 11-of-12.
  • PSU hasn't surrendered a point to the Spartans in five straight meetings.
  • Plymouth State will make its third appearance in the LEC Tournament finals, winning its lone tournament title in 2014.
