DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman
Alexis Michon (Montville, Conn.) struck out back-to-back batters with the tying runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh as Plymouth State University held on for a split of a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) softball games against Western Connecticut State University on Westside Field on Sunday.
Plymouth State wrapped up a brutal run of eight games in four days, going 4-4 during the stretch. The Panthers (15-11, 10-6 LEC) will be the third seed in this week's LEC Softball Tournament. WestConn's season comes to a close with a 7-17 mark (5-11 LEC).
PSU dropped a classic pitcher's duel in game one, falling 1-0 with the game's only run coming in the bottom of the seventh. Looking for a second straight walk-off win to secure the final spot in the tournament, WestConn put the tying runners in scoring position with one down in its final at bat, but Michon struck out the next two hitters to clinch the win.
Plymouth State opens the LEC Tournament against sixth-seeded Keene State College on Tuesday (May 11) in a game that will be played at second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University.
The Basics:
- Game 1: Plymouth State 0, Western Conn. St. 1
- Game 2: Plymouth State 4, Western Conn. St. 2
- Plymouth State (15-11, 10-6 LEC)
- Western Conn. St. (7-17, 5-11 LEC)
How it Happened (Game One):
- Baserunners were hard to come by as the two starting pitchers were in complete control.
- Junior Niah Colby (Lunenburg, Vt.) poked a one-out single up the middle in the first but was stranded.
- WestConn opened the bottom of the inning with a double and a sacrifice moved the runner to third, but graduate student Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) induced a popup on the infield and fly out to keep the game scoreless.
- Graduate student Jen Landers (Berlin, N.H.) singled to open the Panthers' half of the third. She moved to third on a pair of bunts, but a ground out ended the threat.
- The Colonials got a runner to third with one out in the sixth, but a foul out and grounder to third retired the side.
- The hosts opened the seventh with a double to right and a pinch runner came around to score on a single to left for the walk-off win.
By the Numbers (Game One):
- Miller scattered seven hits and allowed just the one run while striking out five over six-plus innings. She finishes the regular season with a 6-6 mark.
- The Panthers were limited to just two baserunners – singles from Colby and Landers.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- PSU took advantage of an error to plate its first run in the second. Landers reached on the miscue and junior Katie Burk (East Islip, N.Y.) doubled for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Vanessa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Rachyl Parslow (Temple, N.H.) followed with back-to-back base hits to double the lead.
- WestConn used a two-out rally to get a run back in the bottom of the inning.
- Sophomore Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.) rocked a solo homer to lead off the fourth as Plymouth State extended the lead to 3-1.
- The Colonials put two runners on in the bottom half but Michon got an infield popup and a fly ball to hold the lead.
- WestConn loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on a single, double and intentional walk, but Michon limited the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly.
- Plymouth State restored the two-run lead in the seventh. Burk doubled and was sacrificed to third and Parslow followed with a double of her own to make it 4-2.
- The hosts got an infield hit to start the bottom of the seventh. After a strikeout, a PSU error put runners on second and third, but Michon wrapped up the game with back-to-back K's as PSU held on for the win.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
- Michon struck out six in the complete game win to improve to 9-4.
- Burk and Parslow each had two-hit games with a single and double. Burk scored twice and drove in one, while Parslow had two RBI.
- McCann's home run was her team-leading fourth of the year.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State has secured the third seed for this week's LEC Tournament. The Panthers and sixth-seeded Keene State travel to second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State for the first round of the double elimination tournament on Tuesday (May 11). PSU will open the day against the Owls, with the winner facing Eastern Connecticut before the two losers square off in an elimination game.
