WSOC: Panthers nipped at Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) scored for the second straight game as Plymouth State University dropped a narrow, 2-1 decision to Emerson College in a non-conference women's soccer game at Rotch Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hicks netted her fourth goal of the young season in the 84th minute, but the Panthers' rally ultimately came up short.

PSU drops its first match of the year to move to 3-1-0, while Emerson improves to 2-0-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Emerson 2
    • Plymouth State (3-1-0)
    • Emerson (2-0-0)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • PSU had a chance to grab the lead in the opening 15 minutes, but a goal was called back after an offsides.
  • Emerson senior Grace Cosgrove (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) got the Lions on the board first with a goal in the 27th minute just past the dive of senior goalkeeper Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.).
  • Cosgrove would find the back of the net again 14 minutes later to extend the Lions' advantage to 2-0 going into halftime.
  • Hicks converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute to pull PSU to within one, 2-1, late but Emerson was able to hold on for the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Hicks has a goal in three of PSU's four contests this year and leads the Panthers with four goals and nine points in the early going.
  • Robbins' seven saves were one shy of her career high. She has posted eight saves three different times in her career, most recently in a double-overtime loss to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Sept. 28, 2019.
  • Emerson was the first opponent to score against the PSU defense after Plymouth State posted three straight shutouts to open the season.
Up Next:
  • PSU returns home to Arold Field for the Little East Conference (LEC) opener against UMass Dartmouth next Saturday (Sept. 18) for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
