WSOC: Meier’s winner leads Panthers in overtime thriller

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) scored the game winning goal 36 seconds into the second overtime as Plymouth State University defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-2, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Alexis Seta (Hampton, N.H.) tallied her first goal of the season in the final minute of the first half to draw the Panthers level with the Corsairs at the break. After a UMD goal midway through the second half it looked like the visitors would escape with a win, but Seta set up sophomore Ashley Plante (Concord, N.H.) with 19-seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time.

Meier netted the game-winner after coming away with a turnover on a UMass Dartmouth goal kick. While under pressure Meier got a left footed shot off just outside the top of the box and snuck it inside the right post.

PSU improves to 4-1-0 and 1-0-0 in the LEC, while UMD falls to 1-3-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, UMass Dartmouth 2 (2OT)
    • Plymouth State (4-1-0, 1-0-0 LEC)
    • Salem State (1-3-1, 0-1-0 LEC)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • UMD took the lead in the 20th minute when senior Kait Bernier (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal.
  • In the final minute of the first half, Plante charged down the left wing to the end line and centered a pass off the UMD goalkeeper where Seta tapped the ball into the empty net.
  • Despite being outplayed on the offensive end, the visitors went ahead in the 76th minute.
  • As time was running out on the Panthers, Plante picked up a loose ball inside the box and tucked the game-tying goal inside the far post to send the game to overtime.
  • After a scoreless ten minutes, Meier struck early in the second overtime to give the Panthers the win.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU outshot UMD 28-6 in the game and held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Senior Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.) made three saves to pick up the win and improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
  • UMass Dartmouth goalie Jessica Costa (Fall River, Mass.) made eight stops in the losing effort.
  • PSU earned four corner kicks to UMass Dartmouth's two.
  • Each of the last two meetings between the two teams was decided in double overtime. PSU topped the Corsairs 4-3 when the teams met at Arold Field in 2019.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers return to the pitch next Saturday (Sept. 25) for a Little East Conference primetime 7:00 p.m. battle at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
