MSOC: Cornejo shines as Panthers nipped in LEC opener

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) made a career-high 11 saves but the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth scored with 3:37 left in double overtime to nip Plymouth State University, 1-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer game at Cressy Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs found the back of the net with a perfectly placed ball on a free kick just outside the box in the 107th minute to secure the win in the LEC opener for both teams.

PSU falls to 0-4-0 and 0-1-0 in the LEC, while UMass Dartmouth improves to 3-1-1 and 1-0-0 in conference play.

The Basics:

  • PSU had a chance in the first overtime when sophomore Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) dribbled down the left wing and got a cross off inside the six-yard box before the Corsairs defense cleared the pressure.
  • On a set piece from 23-yards out, senior Rony Morales (Seekonk, Mass.) sent the ball to the top right corner just out of reach of the diving Cornejo for the game-winner.

  • The Corsairs had nine corner kicks and finished with 12 shots on goal.
  • Cornejo posted a career-high 11 saves with six coming in the first half.
