WTEN: Panthers soar past NVU-Lyndon twice

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team dropped just seven games all day in a pair of 9-0 wins over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in non-conference action at the Holderness School Courts on Sunday.
 
PSU dropped one singles game and one doubles game to coast to a 9-0 win in the morning session, then followed with another comfortable victory to post its third win in two days. Plymouth State also bested the University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-4, in a Little East Conference (LEC) match yesterday.
 
Plymouth State moves to 5-1, while the Hornets remain winless at 0-5.

How it Happened (Match One):
  • Plymouth State was dominant from the opening serve and picked up three quick points in doubles action. Senior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 pairs.
  • Freshmen Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman Amelia Brown (Meredith, N.H.) and junior Alyssa Bettencourt (West Brookfield, Mass.) coasted to 8-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
  • Juniors Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) and Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
  • LaBarre, Miller and Bettencourt also earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, with Brown dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
How it Happened (Match Two):
  • The Panthers were even more impressive in doubles action in the second round as PSU didn't surrender a game. Winter and Marshall went 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, with Cardoso and Puzio teaming up for an 8-0 win at No. 2.
  • The tandem of Brown and Bettencourt rolled to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 pairs.
  • LaBarre jumped to No. 1 singles and coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Miller won by an identical score at No. 2.
  • Cardozo and Puzio went 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4, with Bettencourt dispatching of her opponent at No. 5 by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
  • Brown wrapped up the sweep with a 6-0 win in the opening set before her opponent retired.
By the Numbers:
  • LaBarre improved to 5-1 on the season in singles play, and 3-1 in doubles action. Both losses came to NCAA Division II St. Anselm earlier in the week.
  • Cardoso is 4-1 in singles action and 3-1 in pairs play and has also only fallen to D-II competition.
  • The Panthers have won all 20 meetings between the two teams dating back to 1997 and have held NVU-Lyndon without a team point in each of the last nine.
Up Next:
  • PSU will visit NVU-Johnson on Thursday (Sept. 23) for a non-conference match.
