WTEN: Panthers cruise past UMass Dartmouth

LAKEVILLE, Mass. – Plymouth State University rolled to a fifth straight win and remained unbeaten in the Little East Conference (LEC) as the Panthers handled the University of Massachusetts, 8-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at Lakeville Athletic Club on Saturday.

The Panthers swept doubles play and dropped just one singles match to power to yet another win. PSU's only blemish on the season remains a contest against an NCAA Division II opponent.

Junior Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) was one of four Panthers to pick up wins in both singles and pairs play as PSU topped the Corsairs for the sixth time in the last eight meetings.

Plymouth State improves to 7-1 (3-0 LEC), while UMD drops to 3-2 (2-1 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 8, UMass Dartmouth 1
    • Plymouth State (7-1, 3-0 LEC)
    • UMass Dartmouth (3-2, 2-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Marshall and junior Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while freshmen Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) won by the same score at No. 3.
  • Senior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) teamed up with sophomore Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) for an easy, 8-0 win at No. 2 pairs.
  • Marshall wrapped up her day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while LaBarre picked up the win at No. 4 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 margin.
  • Miller held off a challenge in the first set, 7-5, before cruising to a 6-1 win at No. 5, and Cardoso breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
  • Sophomore Sarah Asciutto (Manchester, Vt.) recovered from a first set setback to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, while UMD's only point came at No. 1 singles.
By the Numbers:
  • The Panthers' five match win streak is the longest since the team won 10-straight during the 2018-19 season. PSU finished that year with a 12-3 mark.
  • LaBarre has won five straight singles matches, while Cardoso, Marshall and Miller have each won their last three.
  • The tandems of Miller/Puzio and LaBarre/Cardoso are both 4-0 on the year.
  • PSU has won six of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State returns home to host the University of Southern Maine in another LEC match on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at 3:30 p.m.
