WSOC: Keene State slips past Panthers in second half

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) gave Plymouth State University an early lead, but Keene State College scored twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 win over the Panthers in Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer action at Arold Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Meier moved into a tie for the team lead with her fourth goal of the season less than three minutes into play and PSU would keep the advantage through the end of the first half.

Keene State came out aggressive in the second, though, and pulled even in the 48th minute. The Owls went ahead in the 79th minute and were able to hold off a PSU rally for the win.

PSU goes to 4-2-1 overall (1-1-1 LEC), while Keene State improves to 3-5-1 (1-1-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Keene State 2
    • Plymouth State (4-2-1, 1-1-1 LEC)
    • Keene State (3-5-1, 1-1-0 LEC)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • It took less than three minutes for Plymouth State to get on the board. Sophomore Tess LeDuc (Marlborough, Mass.) delivered a corner from the right side that found the head of senior Lizzy Bloch (Los Angeles, Calif.). A Keene defender attempted to clear the header, but the ball bounced right to Meier, who easily beat the keeper for the early lead.
  • PSU nearly doubled the lead in the 29th minute when LeDuc made a bid to the bottom left corner from 25 yards out, but the Keene State goalkeeper was able to smother the shot.
  • The Owls squared things less than three minutes into the second half when sophomore Alexa Skinner (Goffstown, N.H.) served a corner kick to the six and senior Alyssa Wilcox's (Barre, Vt.) header found the back of the net.
  • Sophomore Brianna Chaffee (Exeter, R.I.) sent a long ball into the box in the 66th minute and Meier outran the KSC keeper to the loose ball just along the end line. With the keeper out of position, Meier recovered and launched a shot from the left side but the ball sailed wide.
  • Keene went ahead in the 79th minute when a deep ball was delivered over the head of the PSU defense and freshman Raelyn Callahan (Pepperell, Mass.) made a quick move to get past the goalie and hit the open net.
By the Numbers:
  • Keene held a 19-7 advantage in shots, though just nine were on goal.
  • Robbins finished with seven saves, including five in the first half alone.
  • Meier has scored a goal in each of the last three games. Her four goals and nine points are tied with senior Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) for the team lead.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers are home for another LEC contest on Saturday (Oct. 2) for a Homecoming Weekend clash against Rhode Island College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
