WSOC: Meier’s tally leads Panthers over UMaine Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine – Senior Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) picked up her first goal of the season and Plymouth State University posted a second straight shutout as the Panthers toppled the University of Maine Farmington, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action at Leib Field on Saturday afternoon.

For the second straight game PSU dominated the offensive opportunities, but a strong performance by the home goalkeeper kept the Beavers close throughout. Meier tallied the only score of the day in the 33rd minute to lead the Panthers to victory.

Plymouth State moves to 2-0-0 on the young season, while UMaine Farmington falls to 0-2-0.

The Basics:

    • Plymouth State (2-0-0)
    • UMaine Farmington (0-2-0)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State completely controlled play through the opening 30 minutes, peppering the Beavers' goalkeeper with 13 shots and earning seven corner kicks over that span.
  • The hosts didn't get a shot off until the 31st minute, but it was not on target. Just over two minutes later, Meier dribbled around a defender before finding the back of the net to give PSU a 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers continued the suffocating offensive pressure with another five shots before the end of the first half.
  • PSU controlled the pace through the second half and the Panthers' defense held the Beavers without a shot on goal for the remainder of the game.
  • Plymouth State had chances to extend the lead, but junior Callie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) made save-after-save to keep it a one-score game.
  • The hosts had one final chance at drawing even in the closing seconds, but the shot went wide and Plymouth State came out on top.

  • Senior Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) picked up the shutout win for the Panthers without having to make a save.
