WSOC: Hicks provides fireworks in win over Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Senior Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third as Plymouth State University cruised past Salem State University, 5-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
 
Hicks converted a goal and assist in the first half as the Panthers built a 2-0 lead, then sparked a three-goal second half with her score in the 51st minute.
 
Plymouth State dominated the action for a third straight game, outshooting the Vikings by a 24-2 margin while posting a third consecutive shutout.
 
PSU improves remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 3-0-0, while Salem State drops to 0-3-0.

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • After 20 scoreless minutes Hicks broke the tie when she converted a feed from senior Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) in the 25th minute.
  • Junior Emily Haik (Westerly, R.I.) doubled the lead in the 39th minute when her shot snuck past the Vikings' goalkeeper. Hicks set up the score with a perfectly placed pass.
  • Hicks added some insurance in the 51st minute and senior Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) pushed the advantage to 4-0 nine minutes later.
  • Junior Alanna Joyce (Windham, Maine) capped the scoring with her first career goal when she broke free and beat the keeper with less than ten minutes remaining.
By the Numbers:
  • Hicks' five points were a career high.
  • Senior Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) recorded an assist on Joyce's tally.
  • Senior Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) needed just one save to record a second straight shutout.
  • PSU earned 12 corner kicks to Salem State's one and owned a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Plymouth State also opened the 2018 season with three consecutive shutouts.
  • Through three games the Panthers have outshot the competition by an 89-9 margin.
