BANGOR, Maine – Junior
Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) won twice, and Plymouth State University rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win its final four singles matches to outlast Husson University, 6-3, in non-conference women's tennis action at Bangor High Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Winter teamed up with classmate
Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) to win at No. 1 doubles, then cruised to a straight sets win at No. 2 singles to spark the Panthers.
Plymouth State opens the season with a 1-0 mark, while Husson (0-1) drops its season opener.

How it Happened:
- Winter and Marshall got the Panthers started on the right foot with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but Husson responded with identical 8-4 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
- Winter coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles to square the match at 2-2, but Marshall was upended at No. 1 singles as the Eagles pulled back in front, 3-2.
- Freshman Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) picked up a point for PSU with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles and sophomore Sarah Asciutto (Manchester, Vt.) rallied from a first set loss to win at No. 3 singles (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) to put the Panthers ahead.
- Freshman Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) earned the decisive point in a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while senior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) wrapped up the day with a 7-5 win at No. 6.
By the Numbers:
- The Panthers last opening day loss came during the 2009 season – a stretch of 12-straight victories.
- Winter picked up her 13th career singles victory and sits just outside the top-20 in program history. Her 16 career doubles wins are tied for the 15th-most.
