BANGOR, Maine – Husson University used a pair of first half goals to lift the Eagles over Plymouth State University, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action at John P. Boucher Field on Sunday.
The short-handed Panthers, playing on back-to-back days, found themselves down in the 19th minute despite a pair of early chances. The hosts took advantage of a penalty kick chance to double the lead and Plymouth State was unable to break through against the host goalkeeper.
PSU slips to 0-3-0, while Husson ends the day at 1-0-1.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Husson 2
- Plymouth State (0-3-0)
- Husson (1-0-1)
How it Happened:
- The Panthers' first opportunity came early in the opening half, but freshman Filip Banggren (Hagan, Norway) had his shot turned aside by the Eagles' keeper.
- Husson countered after PSU applied additional pressure and sophomore Jordi Cabau Limens (Cubelles, Spain) found himself in a one-on-one opportunity with sophomore goalkeeper Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.), who got a piece of the shot but was unable to control it as the hosts went ahead, 1-0.
- Junior Milian Eklund (Akersberga, Sweden) had a chance to draw PSU even in the 30th minute, but his header drifted over the crossbar.
- Cornejo made a key stop minutes later but a foul in the box led to a penalty kick chance and the Eagles converted with a blast to the top right corner to make it 2-0.
- Husson controlled play in the second half, but Cornejo kept the Panthers close after coming up with a couple big saves. PSU was unable to convert at the offensive end, however, as time ran out.
By the Numbers:
- Cornejo finished with four saves for the Panthers, while his counterpart made three stops.
- Sophomore Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) led PSU with a pair of shots on target.
- The game marked the first meeting between the two teams since the 2010 season.
Up Next:
- PSU will enjoy some time off to recuperate before until opening Little East Conference (LEC) play at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Sept. 18.
