PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student
Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) scored the equalizing goal in the 75th minute to lift Plymouth State University to a 1-1 draw against Rhode Island College during a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game at Alumni Field on Saturday.
Following a scoreless opening half, the Panthers sent in a barrage of shots at the opposing defense but PSU was held short. RIC managed to take the lead midway through the second period, but the Panthers got the momentum back as Siewierski launched the equalizer past the opposing goalkeeper for a 1-1 score, and the match eventually ended in a stalemate.
Plymouth State goes to 5-4-1 (1-2-1 LEC), while the Anchorwomen move to 2-5-2 and 1-2-1 in the LEC.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, RIC 1
- Plymouth State (5-4-1, 1-2-1 LEC)
- RIC (2-5-2, 1-2-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
- Junior Ashley Plante (Concord, N.H.) got off to a hot start as she fired three shots within the opening 20 minutes, but the RIC defense came away with a pair of saves and block to keep the game scoreless.
- Freshman Emily McDonough (Peabody, Mass.) got in on the action as she attempted to put the first point on the board in the final minute, but she was also cut off by the opposing goalkeeper to end the half in a scoreless tie.
- The Panthers came out firing in the second half as junior Tess LeDuc (Marlborough, Mass.) and graduate student Kaliana Palhof (Loudon, N.H.) tallied three shots each over a ten-minute span, while freshman Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) also launched a shot.
- Plymouth State's momentum was cut short when RIC took advantage of a stoppage to score the first goal of the game.
- Siewierski didn't let RIC's lead last long as she converted a free kick from 25 yards out to pull the Panthers even and the game would end that way.
By the Numbers:
- Graduate student Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) recorded her second highest save total of the season after making six stops.
- PSU held the advantage in shots by a 23-11 margin.
- Siewierski's goal was her first of the season and fifth of her career.
- PSU moves to 22-9-2 mark in head-to-head competition with the Anchorwomen dating back to the 1995 season.
