WSOC: Castleton ekes past Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University broke through the Plymouth State University defenses in the final minute of the first half to take the win, 1-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game at Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday.

Junior Tess LeDuc (Marlborough, Mass.) gave the Panthers six chances at corner kicks in the first half, but a stubborn Castleton defense didn't surrender any goals. With just under a minute left in the half, the Spartans took advantage of a free kick from 30-yards out to take a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) led a barrage of shots against the Castleton defense, but it was to no avail as the Panthers would fall short in the 1-0 loss.

Plymouth State falls to 5-7-2 (1-4-2 LEC), while Castleton improves to 5-9-1 and 3-2-1 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Castleton 1
    • Plymouth State (5-7-2, 1-4-2 LEC)
    • Castleton (5-9-1, 3-2-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • LeDuc started the Panthers off with six corner kick attempts throughout the first half, but the Spartans' defense was stingy with every attempt as the game remained scoreless.
  • Graduate student Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) recorded two saves in the middle of the period to ensure that Castleton would not get a score on the board heading to the final minutes of the half.
  • In the final minute of the opening half, Castleton scored the first goal of the game to put themselves ahead of the Panthers going into the break, 1-0.
  • Bellmore led the team in shots in the closing period with two on goal, along with a head attempt by graduate student Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) and a shot by freshman Kaitlin Sullivan (North Kingstown, R.I.) in an attempt to tie the game, but their efforts fell just short as Castleton would close out the game with a 1-0 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Plymouth State was outshot by a minimal 11-7 margin.
  • PSU led the way with eight corners, as LeDuc oversaw seven of them.
  • Plymouth State moves to 6-7-3 against the Spartans. Just one of the last seven meetings have been decided by more than one goal.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers host Eastern Connecticut State next Saturday (Oct. 22) in the final LEC game of the season.
