WSOC: Panthers hold Eastern Connecticut scoreless in stalemate

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Graduate student Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) tallied four saves to stave off Eastern Connecticut State University during a scoreless stalemate in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game at Arold Field on Saturday.

After two impressive saves in the opening minutes, the Panthers swarmed the Warriors with a barrage of shots while limiting their offense to just four tries at scoring through the first half.

PSU continued its attack and heavy defense throughout the second half, but the Eastern Connecticut defense was equally as strong, not allowing a goal to lead to the 0-0 final score.

Plymouth State moves to 5-7-3 (1-4-3 LEC), while the Warriors are now 6-5-4 and 3-2-2 in the Little East.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Eastern Connecticut 0
    • Plymouth State (5-7-3, 1-4-3 LEC)
    • Eastern Connecticut (6-5-4, 3-2-2 LEC)

How it Happened:
  • Register came up with two saves to start the game as those would be the only two she faced in the half.
  • Senior McKayla Palhof (Loudon, N.H.) led the way for the Panthers in shots throughout the first half and she garnered two of the multiple shots by a powerful offensive strike but could not convert any as the score remained 0-0 going into the half.
  • The trio of freshmen Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) and Olivia Howard (Berwick, Maine) and junior Tess LeDuc (Marlborough, Mass.) attempted to get a point on the board as they each fired a shot on goal, but the Warriors' goalkeeper was stingy as she saved each one.
  • Palhof and graduate student Cara Easter (Weare, N.H.) teamed up in the final minutes for a final attempt to break through, but were once again held off and the game ended in a scoreless draw.
By the Numbers:
  • Plymouth State outshot the Warriors by a healthy 18-9 margin, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Register recorded four saves on the day, marking her sixth game with four or more stops.
  • PSU held a 6-2 edge in corners, including 4-1 in the second half.
  • Plymouth State earned a result against both Eastern Connecticut and Western Connecticut in the same season for the first time since 1996.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State wraps up the regular season on Wednesday (Oct. 26) with a non-conference home game against Westfield State. Opening kick is set for 3:00 p.m.
