VB: Panthers sweep Castleton, Fisher

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team swept a trimatch on Saturday, soaring past Castleton University, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-11), and Fisher College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18) at Glenbrook Gymnasium on Saturday.

Sophomore Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) posted a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs while hitting an even .500 in the decisive win over Castleton, while senior Emilee Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) added ten kills and four blocks in the win.

Flanagan was at it again against Fisher with a team-high 11 kills (.364 attack pct.) and three blocks, while junior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) chipped in 10 kills (.500 attack pct.), two blocks and four aces in the victory.

Plymouth State moves to 16-4 (6-1 LEC), while Castleton ends the day at 4-17 (0-6 LEC) and Fisher goes to 17-6.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Castleton 0
  • Plymouth State 3, Fisher 0
    • Plymouth State (16-4, 6-1 LEC)
    • Castleton (4-17, 0-6 LEC)
    • Fisher (17-6)
How it Happened (Castleton):
  • Stogner had four early kills as the Panthers raced out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set. A kill from senior Natalie Gravelle (Portsmouth, N.H.) pushed the margin to double-digits, 15-5, and Flanagan's kill extended the advantage to 23-9 before a Spartans' error closed out the 25-11 win.
  • Tied at 12-12, Stogner and Ryan notched back-to-back kills before Ryan combined with sophomore Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) for a block to give PSU a three-point edge and force a timeout. A four-point spurt extended the lead to 21-14 and the Panthers wrapped up the set, 25-16, moments later.
  • Ryan used a long service run to build a 10-1 lead to start the third set. PSU coasted from there, with Flanagan and Stogner combining for three-straight kills to earn the sweep, 25-11.
By the Numbers (Castleton):
  • PSU hit .313 for the match, with both Stogner and Flanagan hitting an even .500 apiece.
  • Stogner posted 14 kills and 11 digs, while Flanagan had ten kills and four blocks.
  • Ryan chipped in nine kills, seven digs and two blocks.
  • Freshman Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) finished with a match-high 27 assists, while sophomore Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) added ten digs.
  • Plymouth State goes to 6-0 all-time against the Spartans. All six matches have been 3-0 sweeps.

How it Happened (Fisher):
  • Consecutive kills from Flanagan and a pair of aces from freshman Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) gave the Panthers an 8-4 lead in set one. A Stogner kill and Ryan ace extended the margin to 18-11, but the Falcons attempted to rally, pulling to within 22-17. A missed serve squashed the comeback bid, though, and Ryan and junior Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) found the floor for the 25-17 win.
  • Fisher came out motived in set two, going up 13-10. Plymouth State leapfrogged in front, 17-15, behind a Flanagan/McNeeley block and Flanagan's kill. The Falcons stayed close, though, cutting the deficit to 22-21, but once again a missed serve proved costly as three straight Fisher errors helped PSU to a 25-21 win.
  • Looking for the sweep, Plymouth State opened up a 10-3 lead early on, but the Falcons rallied to pull within 12-9. The Panthers responded, though, using a 6-1 surge to take control and a kill from sophomore Morgan Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) closed out the sweep, 25-18.
By the Numbers (Fisher):
  • Plymouth State ripped off 12 aces in the win, with Ryan and Butler posting four apiece.
  • Flanagan led the team with 11 kills and added three blocks, while Ryan added ten kills and two blocks.
  • McDonough posted 17 assists and six digs, with Butler adding 16 assists and five digs.
  • Marucci led the defense with 19 digs.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State goes back to Vermont on Tuesday (Oct. 18) to face Middlebury in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
