WTEN: Panthers tame WestConn on Senior Day

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) celebrated her own Senior Day with a pair of wins as Plymouth State University got past Western Connecticut State University, 7-2, in a Homecoming Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts on Saturday.

Marshall and sophomore Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, and Marshall added a straight sets (6-1, 6-2) win at No. 1 singles as PSU picked up the clutch conference victory.

Plymouth State evens its record at 5-5 (3-3 LEC), while WestConn moves to 4-9 and 1-4 in the Little East.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 7, WestConn 2
    • Plymouth State (5-5, 3-3 LEC)
    • WestConn (4-9, 1-4 LEC)

How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State nearly swept the pairs action. After Marshall and LaBarre down their opponents at No. 1, juniors Sarah Asciutto (Manchester, Vt.) and Erin Good (Dartmouth, Mass.) rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 3.
  • Sophomore Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) nearly made it 3-0, but were nipped, 8-6, at No. 2 pairs.
  • Marshall rolled at No. 1 singles, while Cardoso dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
  • Craigie continued her strong rookie campaign with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Good impressed with a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
  • LaBarre pushed the lead to 7-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, but Asciutto was outlasted at No. 2 (6-3, 4-6, 3-10) to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
  • LaBarre leads the team with six singles wins, one ahead of Marshall and Craigie.
  • Plymouth State has won each of the last 14 meetings between the two teams.
  • The win gives the Panthers a strong hold on a playoff spot with just two regular season matches remaining.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers travel to Castleton on Tuesday (Oct. 11) for a 4:00 p.m. clash with the Spartans before wrapping up the regular season next Saturday (Oct. 15) at Bridgewater State.
