PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) potted the game winning goal with just 6.5 seconds remaining as Plymouth State University rallied past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday night.
The Corsairs burst out of the gates with a pair of goals just over two minutes into the game to take an early lead. Sophomore
Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) cut the deficit in half after finishing with a pretty move around the goaltender, but the Panthers would continue to trail late in the third period.
Senior
Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) pounded home a rebound to pull the Panthers even with 6:12 to play, and Stuckless sent the home crowd into a frenzy when he snuck the game-winner inside the near post as the clock was winding down.
Plymouth State improves to 3-2-1 (3-0-0 MASCAC), while UMass Dartmouth dips to 2-3-0 and 1-2-0 in conference play.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, UMass Dartmouth 2
- Plymouth State (3-2-1, 3-0-0 MASCAC)
- UMass Dartmouth (2-3-0, 1-2-0)
How it Happened:
- The visitors raced out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the opening 2:03.
- Jellvik got PSU on the board at the 12:34 mark when he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone. He used a burst of speed to skate up the left side, made a move around the goaltender and finished with the backhand to cut the margin to 2-1.
- The second period featured up-and-down action with plenty of jarring hits, but neither team was able to solve the opposing goaltender.
- Stuckless had the best scoring chance in the period when he found himself alone with the puck in the slot in the final 30 seconds, but his backhand was gloved away and the score remained 2-1 into the second intermission.
- UMass Dartmouth had a golden chance to add an insurance tally with 13 minutes remaining, but senior Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) made an incredible save to keep it a one-goal game.
- Plymouth State pulled even with 6:12 remaining when Abbate stuffed in the rebound of a shot from the blue line by senior Ted Austin (Sylvania, Ohio).
- The Corsairs nearly pulled ahead during a short-handed bid, but Brawley made a clutch save, then immediately covered up.
- Jellvik had another chance with 58 seconds to go after firing a one-timer off a cross-ice pass, but the Corsairs' goalie made a key glove save.
- With overtime looming, junior Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) dug the puck out of the corner and skated along goal line before flipping a pass to Stuckless in the right circle. His shot snuck just inside the near post with only 6.5 seconds left to lift the Panthers to victory.
By the Numbers:
- Jellvik's goal was his third of the year, while Abbate and Stuckless both scored their second.
- Lanceleve, Austin and sophomore Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) all had assists.
- Lanceleve extended his point streak to six straight games.
- Brawley made 22 saves for the win.
- Plymouth State rallied from a multiple-goal deficit to win for the second straight game.
- The Panthers outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 54-24 margin.
- Junior Jeromey Rancourt (Lewiston, Maine) won 19-of-22 faceoffs.
- Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
- Plymouth State is 23-2-1 against the Corsairs since January of 2014.
Up Next:
- PSU looks to continue the momentum next Saturday (Nov. 19) when Worcester State comes to Hanaway Rink for another MASCAC game. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
