WH: Swanson scores in setback at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska) moved into a tie for the team lead with her third goal of the season, but Bowdoin College pulled away with a pair of third period goals to top Plymouth State University, 4-1, in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Sidney J. Watson Arena on Friday afternoon.

After staving off the Bowdoin attack for much of the first period, the Polar Bears got on the board with just 4:37 left to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The hosts doubled the margin just over four minutes into the middle stanza before Swanson answered with a power play tally late in the frame.

Bowdoin restored the two-goal advantage at the 3:13 mark of the third, then added an insurance marker four minutes later to account for the final score.

Plymouth State dips to 2-9-0, while Bowdoin improves to 3-4-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Bowdoin 4
    • Plymouth State (2-9-0)
    • Bowdoin (3-4-0)
How it Happened:
  • Junior goaltender Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) was tested often in the opening frame, but was up to the challenge.
  • The Polar Bears broke through with 4:37 left in the frame when a wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic and just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin doubled the lead at the 4:24 mark of the second when a skater tucked shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle in the near post to make it 2-0.
  • The hosts had a breakaway chance when a skater came in alone with 6:30 left in the frame, but Julian sprawled to her right to make an incredible stop.
  • Swanson cut the margin in half just before a PSU power play expired when her shot from the left dot got past the screened Polar Bears' goalie is 2:33 left in the period.
  • Bowdoin pushed the advantage back to two with a tally 3:13 into the third when a loose puck found the stick of a Polar Bears' skater, who scored in the slot.
  • The hosts added an insurance goal four-and-a-half minutes later on a 2-on-1 when the shot snuck under Julian's glove to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
  • Bowdoin outshot the Panthers by a 33-16 margin.
  • Junior Mia Zaniboni (Braintree, Mass.) and senior Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) picked up their second and third assists of the year.
  • Four players finished with two shots apiece for PSU: Swanson, graduate student Siri Brett (East Wenatchee, Wash.), senior Abigale McGee (Bozeman, Mont.) and freshman Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.).
  • Swanson also went 11-for-16 in the faceoff circle.
  • Julian finished with 29 saves for the Panthers.
  • All three of Swanson's goals this season are of the power play variety.
  • This was just the second meeting between the two teams.

Up Next:
  • PSU closes out the first half of the season on Saturday (Dec. 10) when SUNY-Canton visits Hanaway Rink for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference tilt. The contest will be team's annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
