MBB: Panthers pull past WestConn; advance to semifinals

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The fourth-seeded Plymouth State University men's basketball team knocked off fifth-seeded Western Connecticut State University, 71-62, in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
 
The Panthers led by a single point with 5:30 to play but allowed just one field goal the rest of the way to walk away with the home playoff victory.
 
Sophomore Kyler Bosse (Manchester, N.H.) led the Panthers with 13 points, while freshman Yansel Reyes (Manchester, N.H.) scored 12 points. Seniors Dante Rivera (Lawrence, Mass.) and Devin Cooper (Newfield, N.Y.) each chipped in nine points in the winning effort.
 
Plymouth State (15-11) advances to Thursday's (Feb. 24) semifinal game against top-seeded #24 University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. PSU is just one of three teams to knock off the Corsairs this season.
 
WestConn ends its season with a 13-12 record.

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • The Panthers came out fast for a quick 8-1 lead just over three minutes into the contest.
  • WestConn came back and took its first lead of the game at 15-14 midway through the frame.
  • Play went back-and-forth, with PSU holding a 26-25 edge with 6:17 remaining in the half.
  • Plymouth State scored the final ten points of the half to take a 36-28 advantage into the locker room.
  • WestConn opened the second half with an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to 39-36.
  • The visitors continued to push, regaining the lead, 45-44, with 12:42 on the clock, before extending the advantage to 52-46 two minutes later.
  • PSU answered with a 10-0 run to go back in front at the 6:40 mark.
  • WestConn was able to get within one point, 57-56, but a pair of Rivera free throws followed by dagger three-pointers from Cooper and Reyes gave PSU plenty of breathing room down the stretch.
By the Numbers:
  • Plymouth State shot 25-of-54 (46.3%) from the floor and 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three.
  • PSU held a 32-30 edge on the boards, including 9-5 on the offensive glass.
  • The Panthers led for over 80% of the game and recorded assists on 68% of their field goals.
  • PSU's bench outscored WestConn's by a 21-13 margin.
  • Plymouth State had 12 second-chance points to just two for the visitors.
  • PSU has won three-of-four against WestConn.
  • Discounting the abbreviated 2020-21 season, Plymouth State will appear in back-to-back semifinal games for the first time since the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
