PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore
Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) racked up a career best 17 digs, but Plymouth State University came out on the short end of a 3-1 (17-25, 17-25, 25-17, 17-25) decision against Clarkson University on day one of the Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State on Friday evening.
Despite Marucci's career effort, the Clarkson offense was efficient hitting a combined .254 for the match. The Panthers offense, slow to get on track in the first two sets, put together a strong third set with an impressive 13 kills and just two errors to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Golden Knights were able to close out the set before PSU could force a decisive fifth set.
Plymouth State evens its record at 1-1, while Clarkson wins its season opener. The Panthers continue tournament play with a pair of games tomorrow. PSU faces off against NCAA Division II St. Michael's College at 11:00 a.m., then wraps up the tournament against Coast Guard at 1:00 p.m.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, Clarkson 3
- Plymouth State (1-1)
- Clarkson (1-0)
How it Happened:
- Clarkson ripped off the first five points of the game and eventually extended the lead to 22-11. Junior Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) found the floor to spark a comeback attempt and sophomore Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) served up three aces during a lengthy run as the Panthers pulled to within five, 22-17. Clarkson recovered, though, notching the final three points for the 25-17 win.
- The Golden Knights got out to another strong start in set two to take a 7-3 lead. Freshman Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) recorded an ace and sophomore Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) notched a kill to cut the margin to 14-13, but Clarkson scored 11 of the next 12 points for the 25-14 victory.
- The tables turned in set three as PSU got off to the good start. Junior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) had a kill and block in a six-point run to give the Panthers an 11-3 lead. Plymouth State maintained a five-point lead the rest of the way and a Golden Knights' error gave the Panthers a 25-17 win.
- Set four went back-and-forth throughout with each team trading points in bunches. Clarkson took a 9-5 advantage early, but Ryan had a pair of kills and Stogner ripped off two aces as PSU leapfrogged into an 11-9 lead. The Golden Knights rallied in front, 14-13, but PSU answered for a 17-16 lead. Clarkson took control from there, though, scoring the final nine points for the 25-17 win.
By the Numbers:
- Marucci's previous career best of 11 digs came in last year's Little East Conference (LEC) semifinal match against Eastern Connecticut.
- The Panthers hit a match-best .367 in set three.
- Senior Emilee Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) and Stogner had a team-high nine kills apiece, while Ryan chipped in eight kills and two blocks.
- Stogner added five aces and six digs to her stat line.
- Freshman Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) posted 19 assists and nine digs.
- The match-up was the first between the two teams.
