PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Sondre Asheim (Klepp, Norway) scored once and added a pair of assists as Plymouth State University topped UMaine Farmington, 4-1, at Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.
Asheim set up sophomore
Walter Driscoll (Kittery Point, Maine) in the 35th minute before tallying his first goal of the season less than five minutes later as the Panthers went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Asheim picked up his second helper of the afternoon early in the second half and, despite UMaine Farmington getting on the board in the 59th minute, the Panthers would control play the rest of the way.
Plymouth State improves to 2-0-0 for the first time since the 2009 season, while UMaine Farmington drops its season opener.

How it Happened:
- The Beavers had a chance in the 17th minute when a long pass found the left wing open at the corner of the box, but junior Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) made a sliding play to clear the ball away.
- Plymouth State opened the scoring when Asheim delivered a perfect ball to the far post off a corner on the right side and Driscoll headed it into the open net for the 1-0 lead.
- PSU added to the lead with just under six minutes remaining in the half when junior Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) had his shot from 10 yards out blocked by the UMF goalkeeper. The loose ball rebounded to Asheim just outside the box and he chipped it over the defense for a 2-0 lead.
- The Panthers increased the margin to 3-0 in the 51st minute off another corner. Asheim again sent a perfect ball into the box where senior Eric Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) shouldered the ball before bicycling it inside the left post.
- UMaine Farmington got a goal back in the 59th minute, but PSU continued to control the pace.
- Junior Jacob Santos (Anacortes, Wash.) completed the scoring in the 84th minute when a ball deflected off a UMF defender and he raced in before beating the keeper to the left corner.
By the Numbers:
- Cornejo finished with five saves to win his second straight start.
- Asheim has registered a point in each of the Panthers' two games, already surpassing his total from last season.
- Higgins and Santos each recorded their first career goals.
- Plymouth State held a 22-12 advantage in shots.
- The teams were meeting for just the second time. The Beavers earned a 5-1 win in Maine a year ago.
- PSU starts a season with a 2-0-0 record for the first time in 13 years. The 2009 squad won its first four contests.
