BRISTOL, R.I. – Freshman
Nick Savariego (Hillsdale, N.J.) and junior
Ty Miller (Groton, Conn.) both earned pins to lead the Plymouth State University wrestling team in a trimeet at Roger Williams University on Saturday.
The Hawks were rude hosts as the eighth-ranked program in the latest New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) poll blanked PSU 55-0, and also topped Bridgewater State by a 37-12 margin.
The Panthers put up a good fight against Bridgewater State but came up short by a 34-15 score. Savariego and Miller provided the fireworks against the Bears, as each won by fall.
Plymouth State moves to 1-9 in dual meets, while the Hawks improve to 18-4. Bridgewater State ends the day with a 2-8 record.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Roger Williams 55
- Plymouth State 15, Bridgewater State 34
- Roger Williams 37, Bridgewater State 12
- Plymouth State (1-9)
- Roger Williams (18-4)
- Bridgewater State (2-8)
How it Happened:
- Though the Panthers battled, Roger Williams was just too powerful. The Hawks picked up five wins by fall while Plymouth State forfeited at 133 and 285 to give the hosts an insurmountable lead.
- Junior Christian Kuechler (Chester, N.H.) suffered a technical fall, while sophomore Colin Hile (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Trevor O'Mara (Litchfield, N.H.) were handed major decision setbacks.
- Undeterred, the Panthers regrouped for the matchup with Bridgewater State and Savariego got PSU off to a good start with a pin in 2:23.
- Graduate student Tyler O'Mara (Litchfield, N.H.) came out on the short end of an 8-1 decision, but Miller won by fall in 5:56 as PSU trailed just 19-12.
- Hile battled at 174 pounds but was outscored by a minor 4-1 margin and the Panthers had to forfeit 184 and 285.
- Kuechler earned PSU another three points after outlasting his opponent for a 5-4 decision at 197 to account for the final score.
Up Next:
- The Panthers head to Southern Maine next Saturday (Feb. 4) for a quad meet with Western New England University, Trinity College and the host Huskies.
