PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) recorded his second shutout of the year and sophomore
Cameron Patton (Bible Hill, Nova Scotia) tallied a pair of goals in his first game with the Panthers as Plymouth State University topped Westfield State University, 4-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday evening.
Plymouth State got on the board midway through the opening period on a power play goal from junior
Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia), then made it 2-0 when Patton redirected a shot past the Owls' goaltender less than two minutes later.
The Panthers put the game away with two more tallies in the third period, including Patton's second of the night, while Brawley stopped all 22 shots he faced to notch the shutout.
Now riding a seven-game win streak, PSU runs its record to 11-3-1 (8-0-0 MASCAC), while Westfield State dips to 5-7-1 and 2-5-0 in the MASCAC.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 4, Westfield State 0
- Plymouth State (11-3-1, 8-0-0 MASCAC)
- Westfield State (5-7-1, 2-5-0 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
- Plymouth State had an early chance when freshman Payton Schaly (Orillia, Ontario) whipped a shot from the left faceoff circle that rang the pipe less than two minutes in.
- Lanceleve gave the home team the lead during an abbreviated power play when he buried a one-timer from the left faceoff dot after a no-look feed from sophomore Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) at the 11:41 mark.
- PSU doubled the margin just 1:26 later when Patton tipped in a shot by freshman Rider McCallum (Langley, British Columbia).
- Plymouth State dominated the puck throughout the second period, outshooting the Owls by a lopsided 24-3 margin, but the Westfield State goaltender made several impressive saves to keep the score at 2-0.
- The Panthers put the game out of reach with another pair of quick goals to open the third period. Sophomore Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) made it 3-0 when he potted his eighth of the year just 1:38 into the frame, and Patton picked up his second of the night at the 2:40 mark when he stuffed the puck in on the weakside after a shot by senior Jovan Zimmerman (Boulder, Colo.) rebounded off the end boards.
By the Numbers:
- Lanceleve finished with a goal and an assist to move into the team lead in scoring. His ten goals and 22 points are both team highs.
- Patton scored twice on just four shots in his first game with the team after transferring from Utica, while McCallum had a pair of helpers.
- Five other players recorded assists on the night – Stuckless, Schaly, Zimmerman, senior Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) and graduate student Ben Chipman (North Vancouver, British Columbia).
- Brawley made 22 saves for his fourth career shutout.
- Plymouth State owned a 53-22 advantage in shots.
- The Panthers finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Westfield State was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
- PSU is 6-1-1 against the Owls over the last eight meetings and 32-10-1 all-time dating back to the 2008-09 season.
