VB: Panthers’ dynamic offense sweeps past ECSU, Suffolk

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) and junior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) combined for 17 kills and Plymouth State University hit .513 as the Panthers swept past Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-12) in Little East Conference (LEC) women's volleyball action at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium on Saturday.
 
PSU followed with another outstanding offensive performance in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-22) win over Suffolk University, hitting .402 for the match and slamming 16 kills with just one error in the opening set. PSU used a balanced attack to roll past the Rams, with senior Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) posting 11 kills and five different players adding seven apiece.
 
In the dynamic performance against Eastern Connecticut, Ryan slammed 10 kills on 13 attempts, while Sanderson chipped in seven kills on 12 swings. Plymouth State's offense committed just two attack errors in the match. The team's .513 attack percentage is tied for the sixth highest in program history.
 
Plymouth State climbs to 18-2 and 7-0 in the LEC. Eastern Connecticut goes to 10-11 (2-3 LEC) after falling to Suffolk in the day's final match, while the Rams move to 15-9 on the year.

How it Happened (Eastern Connecticut):
  • Junior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) opened the first set with an ace during a six-point run. The hosts answered with the next three points, but that was as close as they would get. Freshman Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) found the floor to make it 12-8 and sophomore Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) ran off the next six points to increase the margin to double digits. Marucci closed out the 25-10 win by serving the last five points.
  • The Warriors took their only lead of set two, 2-0, but Marucci picked up a pair of aces as the Panthers went in front, 5-3. Sophomore Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) ripped off an 11-point run with junior Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) and Ryan each pounding three kills during the spurt as the lead grew to 17-4 and the Panthers rolled from there. King closed out the 25-8 win with a kill.
  • The Panthers led set three from start to finish, though Eastern Connecticut kept things close through the early stages. Ryan's kill sparked a 5-1 run as PSU pushed the lead to 11-5 and the Warriors were unable to keep pace. Butler's kill made it a 19-10 advantage and McDonough and Hampton served out the rest of the set, with Hampton recording back-to-back aces for the 25-12 victory.
By the Numbers (Eastern Connecticut):
  • Ryan finished with 10 kills on 13 attempts (.769) and added five blocks, while Sanderson hit .583 after registering seven kills on 12 attacks with two blocks.
  • Hampton chipped in seven kills while hitting .389 and added 10 digs, two aces and two blocks.
  • McDonough posted 17 assists and five digs, with Butler adding 18 assists and two aces.
  • Marucci led all players with 17 digs and four aces.
  • Plymouth State hit .500 in the opening set, pounding down an impressive 16 kills with just one error.
  • The Panthers were even better in set two, with 15 kills on 23 attempts without an error for a .652 attack percentage.
  • PSU limited the Warriors to an .011 attack percentage for the match.
  • Eastern Connecticut holds a slight 23-19 edge in the all-time series, though Plymouth State has won four of the last five.
 
How it Happened (Suffolk):
  • Things stayed close through the early stages of the opening set, as a kill trimmed PSU's lead to 12-11, but Ryan followed with a block and Butler's ace forced a Suffolk timeout. Ruan and Stogner teamed up for a block out of the break as Butler extended the lead to 17-11. Plymouth State closed the set on an 8-3 run, with King pounding down the set-winning kill, 25-14.
  • The Panthers got out to a good start, with Ryan and McNeeley pounding kills and Stogner adding an ace for a 7-2 advantage. Suffolk tried to keep pace, but Ryan and McDonough both had lengthy service runs, with McDonough running off ten straight points for a 23-5 lead. The Rams made a half-hearted comeback attempt, but an attack error gave PSU the 25-10 win.
  • The third set was the most competitive of the day for the Panthers. A block by Ryan and McNeeley tied the score at 14 and PSU would pull in front on back-to-back kills from McNeeley and Hampton. PSU stayed in front the rest of the way, with King's kill giving the Panthers a 19-15 advantage and forcing a Suffolk timeout. The Rams rallied, pulling to within a point (21-20), but Stogner stopped the comeback bid and Sanderson's kill and ace gave the Panthers match-point, before Ryan's block wrapped up the 25-22 win.
By the Numbers (Suffolk):
  • PSU's offense stayed hot, hitting at a .402 clip, while the Panthers limited Suffolk to just .095.
  • King posted 11 kills (.588 pct) and added a pair of solo blocks, while McNeeley finished with seven kills on 11 attempts without an error.
  • Sanderson, Hampton, Stogner, and Ryan all added seven kills apiece.
  • Butler posted 20 assists and an ace, with McDonough contributing 17 assists and three aces.
  • Marucci finished with a match-best 16 digs.
  • The Panthers are a perfect 7-0 against Suffolk, winning each of the matches in straight sets.
