VB: Panthers tame Norwich for third straight win

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) smashed nine kills and hit an even .500 as Plymouth State University soared past Norwich University, 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 25-17), in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Andrews Hall on Tuesday evening.

Plymouth State was dominant in the opening set, pounding ten kills against just one error to hit .409 on the way to a 25-14 win, but the Cadets took advantage of some unforced errors to even the match with a 25-21 win in set two. The Panthers seized control from there, ripping off 25-13, 25-17 wins to close out the 3-1 victory and win their third straight match.

Ryan was a key factor on both sides of the ball, as her nine kills matched the game-high, while she added a match-best five blocks.

Plymouth State improves to 5-2, while the Cadets dip to 1-4.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Norwich 1
    • Plymouth State (5-2)
    • Norwich (1-4)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State wasted little time getting going in the opening set as Ryan and junior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) teamed up for an early block to spark a five-point run. The Panthers continued to add to the advantage and sophomore Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) served three straight aces to make it a 20-10 lead. The teams traded points from there until Sanderson found the floor to wrap up a 25-14 win.
  • Set two was the most competitive with ten ties. With the score tied at 16-16, the hosts used a 3-0 run to pull in front and Norwich was able to keep the Panthers at arm's length the rest of the way. Freshman Abigail Bassingthwaite (Wentworth, N.H.) slammed a kill and Sanderson followed with an ace to pull within 23-21, but the Cadets took advantage of back-to-back errors to even the match behind a 25-21 win.
  • PSU quickly regrouped, using a long service run from Butler, which included three Ryan kills, to take an 8-4 lead and force an early timeout. The Panthers stayed in front the rest of the way, with freshman Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) notching consecutive aces and senior Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) adding a kill to make it 19-10. Plymouth State coasted from there, with another Ryan winner and a Cadets' error closing out a 25-13 victory.
  • Junior Ava Duymazlar (Plymouth, N.H.) served the Panthers to a 7-3 lead early in set four and Plymouth State never looked back. Junior Morgan Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) banged home back-to-back kills to make it 15-8 and PSU maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way, before Ryan's final kill wrapped up the 25-17 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Ryan posted nine kills and hit an even .500 (9-1-16), while adding five blocks and two aces.
  • Hampton added six kills and 10 digs, while Drinkwater chipped in five kills.
  • Sophomore Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) dished out 26 assists as junior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) paced the defense with 18 digs.
  • PSU recorded 10 kills and hit .409 (10-1-22), while adding four aces and three team blocks in the opening set alone.
  • Plymouth State had 15 aces in the win.
  • The Panthers hit .179 for the match, but limited Norwich to just -.054. The Cadets had a positive attack percentage in just the second set (.071).
  • Plymouth State is a perfect 11-0 in the all-time match up, with nine of victories coming in 3-0 sweeps.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to Wheaton College on Saturday (Sept. 16) for a trimatch with the host Lyons and Western New England starting at 1:00 p.m.
