20240113 - MH at Fitchburg

Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

MH: Panthers ground Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) had yet another multi-point game to lead Plymouth State University past Fitchburg State University, 4-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Wallace Civic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Redick picked up a pair of assists and scored his nation-leading 17th goal of the year, an empty-netter in the final two minutes, as the Panthers extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games.

Junior Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) gave PSU a lead it wouldn't relinquish with a power play tally less than three minutes into the game and freshman Patrick O'Connell (West Chester, Pa.) made it 2-0 in the final minutes of the period.

Fitchburg State scored the lone goal of the middle stanza to make things interesting, but junior Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) restored the two-goal margin midway through the third and Redick put the game on ice with his marker with 1:01 left on the clock.

Plymouth State jumps to 12-1-2 (9-0-2 MASCAC), while Fitchburg State dips to 7-6-2 (6-3-2 MASCAC).

The Basics:

    • Plymouth State (12-1-2, 9-0-2 MASCAC)
    • Fitchburg State (7-6-2, 6-3-2 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State struck first with a power play goal just 2:54 into the contest. Tait received a quick pass from Stuckless in the slot and beat the Fitchburg State goalie to the stick side for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers doubled the lead with 1:18 left to play. Freshman David Matousek (West Chester, Pa.) carried the puck into the zone for a 2-on-2 and hit the trailer, junior Cam Patton (Truro, Nova Scotia), in the high slot. Patton whipped a quick pass to O'Connell on the near post for the easy tap-in to make it 2-0.
  • Fitchburg State got one back in the middle stanza to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • PSU restored the two-goal lead at the 13:12 mark of the third period with another power play tally. Sophomore Rider McCallum (Langley, British Columbia) sent a pass to Stuckless on the farside post and Stuckless banged it home for a 3-1 advantage.
  • Redick closed out the scoring with an empty-netter with just over a minute remaining to account for the 4-1 final.
