VB: Panthers sweep past Keene State, reach 20 wins again

KEENE, N.H. – Graduate student Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) and sophomore Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) combined for 19 kills to lead Plymouth State University to a sweep of Keene State College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-13), in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's volleyball match at Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Graduate student Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) had a flurry of kills in the middle stages of set one to help the Panthers snag a seven-point lead on the way to a 25-18 victory. Set two remained tight throughout, with PSU scoring the final four points to flip a 23-21 deficit into a 25-23 win and the Panthers used a 7-0 surge to run away with set three, 25-13.

Plymouth State jumps to 20-2 (6-0 LEC), reaching the 20-win threshold for the fourth straight year. The Owls drop to 9-14 (1-5 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Keene State 0
    • Plymouth State (20-2, 6-0 LEC)
    • Keene State (9-14, 1-5 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The first half of the opening set remained tight, as neither team could gain more than a two-point advantage. Plymouth State started to pull away with kills from Ryan and McNeeley to go up 16-12 and force an Owls' timeout. The duo teamed up for a block and McNeeley added two more kills to extend the margin to 21-14 and a Keene State error closed out the 25-18 win.
  • Set two followed a similar script, though Keene State used a 3-0 spurt to snap a 10-10 tie and cause a PSU timeout. The Owls maintained the slight edge out of the break until a run of three straight errors put Plymouth State in front, 17-16. The hosts would rally into the lead, 22-19, but PSU would claw back. Trailing 23-21, senior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) slammed down a kill. The Owls gifted PSU set point with back-to-back errors and Ryan's kill capped the 25-23 victory.
  • Graduate student Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) notched a kill to spark a 4-0 spurt as PSU took an 8-5 lead in set three. Leading 13-9, Ryan smashed a kill and freshman Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) followed with a long service run to push the margin to 20-9 and the Panthers would coast to the 25-13 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Ryan finished with a match-high ten kills (.333 attack pct.) and added four blocks and three digs.
  • Hampton smashed nine kills against just one error (.348 attack pct.) with five digs, while King added four kills without an error (.308).
  • Senior Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) and classmate Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) posted 13 digs apiece.
  • Emerson finished with 16 assists and six digs, while senior Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) added 11 assists, three digs and two aces.
  • With the win, Plymouth State reached the 20-win threshold for the fourth straight year and 20th time in the program's 29-year history.
  • PSU limited the Owls to just a .073 attack percentage.
  • Keene State holds a narrow 24-22 advantage in the all-time series.
