WSWIM: Bailey boasts triple crown in season opening double dual

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Olivia Bailey (Wrentham, Mass.) had a busy day with three individual event wins as the Plymouth State University women's swim team fell to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Husson University in a double dual meet at Bruyette Natatorium on Saturday morning.
 
Bailey teamed up with sophomore Gabby Gladu (Lewiston, Maine), junior Jackie Gaigals (Rochester, N.H.) and senior Liana Gobin (Belfast, Maine) to score third in the 200-yard medley relay in a combined time of 2:13.56. She later went on her own to win the 50-yard backstroke in 31.61 seconds before claiming the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.18. She capped her day with a win in the 100-yard IM in 1:11.62, beating the next closest finisher by over five seconds.
 
Plymouth State starts the year at 0-2. Husson, which topped the Blue Jays, goes to 2-0, while St. Joseph is 2-1.

Individual Event Top Finishers: Teaming Up: How it Happened:
  • The foursome of Bailey, Gladu, Gaigals and Gobin began the day in the 200-yard medley relay where they took third in 2:13.56.
  • Bailey solidified the first individual victory in the 50-yard backstroke in 31.61.
  • Gaigals nabbed a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:13.71, with Gobin behind her in fourth.
  • Sophomore Laurel Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) snagged third in the 50-yard freestyle in 30.56.
  • Gaigals got another second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:04.11, while Gladu was fifth in 1:10.51.
  • Bailey won again in the 100-yard backstroke after touching the wall in 1:07.18. Senior Sam Morales-Barszcz (Meriden, Conn.) finished fifth in 1:24.79.
  • Bennett later placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:33.12.
  • Gaigals and Gladu combined again for two more top-five finishes in the 50-yard butterfly in 31.11 and 35.93, respectively.
  • Bailey capped her day with a final victory in the 100-yard IM in 1:11.62.
  • The Panthers closed out the meet when the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Bennett, Morales-Barszcz, sophomore Vickie Ni (Lebanon, N.H.) and sophomore Caitlyn Falvey (Dracut, Mass.) placed fourth in 2:13.47.
