Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

VB: Panthers stuff Framingham State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University combined for eight blocks and graduate student Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) slammed 17 kills and hit better than .500 as the Panthers topped Framingham State University, 3-1 (25-5, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22) in non-conference women's volleyball action at Foley Gymnasium on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers were flawless in a dominant first set and held a comfortable lead for much of set two to take a quick 2-0 lead. Framingham State built a 20-11 lead in set three and PSU's late comeback bid fell short, but the Panthers closed out the victory in a tight fourth set.

Plymouth State hit .341 for the match, with freshman Cami Wessels (Plantsville, Conn.) and sophomore Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) joining Ryan with big days at the net.

Prior to the match, Plymouth State honored graduate student Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) and senior Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) as Plymouth State Athletics Department Award winners from the 2023-24 school year.

Plymouth State improves to 14-1, while the Rams fall to 4-12.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Framingham State 1
    • Plymouth State (14-1)
    • Framingham State (4-12)
How it Happened:
  • Set one was all Panthers as senior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) served the first seven points of the game. PSU extended the lead to 14-2 on Hampton's kill and Ryan's seven-point service run gave the Panthers set point before McNeeley wrapped up the 25-5 win with a kill.
  • The Rams stuck around in the early stages of set two. Back-to-back blocks helped create some distance, but Framingham State rallied to cut the deficit to 14-12. A kill from sophomore Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) and strong serving from junior Veronika Castro Rodriguez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) helped the hosts run the margin up to 19-13 as Framingham State took a timeout. Plymouth State stayed in control out of the break with aces from senior Ava Duymazlar (Plymouth, N.H.) and Ryan closing out the 25-17 win.
  • The Rams regrouped between sets and came out strong in set three, quickly taking a 7-2 lead. The visitors slowly stretched the lead to 21-12 before Plymouth State attempted a late rally. Ryan's kill and consecutive aces sparked a 9-3 surge, but a Framingham State kill ended the comeback bid, 25-21.
  • Set four stayed close throughout. McDonough's service run helped build a three-point advantage for the Panthers, 10-7, but Framingham State hung around. The Rams pulled to within one, 18-17, before a kill from graduate student Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) ignited a five-point run. The Rams pulled to within two, 24-22, but Ryan's final kill wrapped up the 25-22 victory.
By the Numbers:
  • Ryan finished with 17 kills and hit .536, adding five aces and three blocks.
  • Wessels and Hampton combined for 17 kills without an error.
  • Freshmen Claire Parker (Gurnee, Ill.) and Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) posted 13 assists apiece, with McDonough chipping in a dozen.
  • Emerson added three aces to her stat line.
  • Plymouth State posted eight team blocks (16 block assists), while the Rams finished with no blocks in the match.
  • Marucci led the defense with 11 digs.
