WTEN: Panthers tame Huskies

GORHAM, Maine – Plymouth State University won five singles matches without dropping a game in a dominant win over the University of Southern Maine, 8-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at Gorham High Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Panthers swept through doubles play, overpowering the hosts by identical 8-0 scores at Nos. 1 and 2, while rolling to an 8-1 win at No. 3. Plymouth State continued its impressive performance in singles play, cruising to straight set wins without dropping a game at every slot but No. 1.
 
Plymouth State improves to 4-5 (3-4 LEC), while the Huskies stay winless at 0-9 (0-7 LEC).

How it Happened:
  • Senior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore Chloe Ahern (Middleton, Mass.) steamrolled their opponents at No. 1 pairs with an 8-0 win.
  • Junior Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) and senior Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) followed suit with a dominant 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
  • Sophomore Maddie Lorenz (Jefferson, N.H.) teamed up with classmate Sofia Orama (Marlborough, Conn.) to complete the sweep of pairs action with an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
  • LaBarre rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, with Craigie doing the same at No. 3.
  • Cardoso (No. 4), Lorenz (No. 5) and Orama (No. 6) also won in straight sets without dropping a game.
  • Ahern dropped her opening set, 6-3, but rebounded to take set two by a 6-1 score. Her opponent held on in the third set, eking out a 10-7 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Orama leads the team with six singles wins.
  • Cardoso and Craigie have been the top doubles team to date, going 5-4 at No. 2.
  • PSU has won three of its last four, and four of its last six matches.
  • Plymouth State controls the all-time series, winning 27-of-31 matches.
  • The Panthers have won each of the last 16 meetings.
