20241109 - MH NEC

Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

MH: Panthers roll past NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – Junior Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) posted a pair of goals and an assist and senior Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) had a four-point game as Plymouth State University coasted past New England College, 5-1, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at Lee Clement Arena on Saturday night.

Redick opened the scoring midway through the opening period when he knocked in the rebound of a shot off the stick of senior Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.). The Pilgrims pulled even roughly five minutes later and the game would remain tied into the intermission.

The duo hooked up again less than two minutes into the second period, as Tait fed Redick on a well-played 2-on-1 to give PSU the lead back and the Panthers would cruise from there. Stuckless converted on a power play chance with eight minutes left in the frame and sophomore Will Pray (Wheaton, Ill.) made it 4-1 with a snipe from the high slot late in the stanza.

Senior Cam Patton (Bible Hill, Nova Scotia) capped the scoring with a third period tally as the Panthers rolled to victory.

Plymouth State evens out a 2-2-0, while the Pilgrims dip to 0-2-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 5, NEC x1
    • Plymouth State (2-2-0)
    • NEC (0-2-0)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State broke through midway through the first period when junior Brendan Doyle (Stratham, N.H.) played the puck to Redick in the neutral zone. Redick connected with Tait, who used a burst of speed to break down the right side. His shot was kicked aside, but Redick was there to convert the rebound for the 1-0 lead at the 10:24 mark of the period.
  • NEC pulled even late in the frame, using a transition breakout for a 3-on-2 and a shot from the right circle found the top left corner to make it 1-1 with 4:41 left in the frame. The score would remain deadlocked into intermission.
  • The Panthers needed just 90 seconds of second period action to go back in front. Stuckless flipped the puck from the half wall to Redick, who quickly fed Tait on the left side. The two streaked to the net, with Tait holding the puck until the lone NEC defender committed, before hitting Redick for the one-timer to make it 2-1.
  • PSU extended the lead to 3-1 when Stuckless whipped a low angle shot past the NEC goaltender during a power play with 7:51 left in the frame.
  • Junior Brandon Shantz (San Antonio, Texas) went post-to-post to make a pair of saves during some four-on-four play later in the period.
  • With 2:36 left in the stanza, Pray took a pass in the corner and skated through the high slot before snapping a wrist shot past the goalie to make it 4-1.
  • Patton pushed the margin to 5-1 when he blasted a one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Pray at the 7:37 mark of the third and the Panthers would coast to the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Redick finished with two goals and an assist. He posted six points in the Panthers' two wins over the weekend.
  • Stuckless scored for the second straight game, adding three assists to his stat line. His four points were a career high.
  • After potting a hat trick last night, Tait dished out a pair of helpers for a five-point weekend.
  • Pray and Patton finished with a goal and an assist each, while Doyle and junior Rider McCallum (Langley, British Columbia) each tallied assists. Doyle's helper was his first point in a PSU uniform.
  • Shantz made 27 saves to pick up the win.
  • NEC holds a 16-6-1 advantage in the all-time series, though the Panthers have won each of the last three meetings.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State opens MASCAC play on Friday (Nov. 15) when Worcester State comes to Hanaway Rink for a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
