WBB: Panthers fall in season opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Maine Farmington Beavers, 58-53, in a non-conference match to open the 2024-25 season in Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
 
In a match that saw Plymouth State in front for more than three quarters, a late surge from the Beavers secured the come-from-behind win to UMF for the second straight season.
 
Freshman Kaley Goodhart (Center Conway, N.H.) led all scorers with 18 points, while graduate student Sabrina Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) recorded a double-double (12 pts, 10 reb), setting the tone for the Panthers on both ends of the floor.
 
Plymouth State opens the campaign with a 0-1 record, while the Beavers start off at 1-0.

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • The Panthers opened play with the first seven points of the contest to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • UMF closed the gap to 9-6 with under a minute to play in the first.
  • Plymouth State knocked down a free throw for the final point of the opening frame as the Panthers led 10-6 after one.
  • The Beavers went on a 10-2 run in the second quarter to take their first lead of the contest 22-19 with 4:20 remaining until halftime.
  • Plymouth State closed out the frame strongly to regain the lead, 28-25, at the midway break.
  • The Panthers opened the third quarter with a strong run of play to extend the advantage to its largest of the game, 39-29, with 6:24 on the clock.
  • The Beavers cut into the deficit as eight unanswered points closed the gap to 39-37 with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter.
  • UMF continued to keep the game within reach and the teams traded buckets to round out the third quarter with the Panthers holding a narrow 44-42 lead.
  • Things were knotted at 47-47 with 6:10 remaining in the contest.
  • Behind a late 11-1 run, the Beavers catapulted back in front and put the game away with the opening day victory.

  • The Panthers went 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the floor and 4-of-20 (20.0%) from three.
  • UMF outrebounded the Panthers 41-39 overall and 11-9 on the offensive glass.
