VB: Panthers’ offense clicks in sweep of Norwich

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University pounded 34 kills and hit .500 in a 3-0 sweep of Norwich University in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Panthers registered just five attack errors and ripped off 19 service aces to stay unbeaten on the season, coasting to the win with identical set scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-10.

Plymouth State improves to 5-0, while the Cadets slide to 1-5.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Norwich 0
    • Plymouth State (5-0)
    • Norwich (1-5)
How it Happened:
  • After a back-and-forth start, Plymouth State used a four-point run to snag a 13-7 advantage. The teams traded points until a kill from senior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) sent freshman Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) to the service line, where she ripped off three aces during a five-point run to extend the margin to 21-9. The Panthers coasted from there, with graduate student Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) closing out the 25-10 win with a thundering kill.
  • Sophomore Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) served ten straight points, including three aces, as PSU raced out to a 14-5 advantage in set two. Plymouth State extended the margin with Ryan once again punctuating a 25-10 decision with a set-ending kill.
  • The third set was all Plymouth State right from the start. Freshman Claire Parker (Gurnee, Ill.) opened the set with a 7-0 run, including three aces, to force Norwich into an early timeout. Classmate Cami Wessels (Plantsville, Conn.) made it 10-1 with back-to-back aces as the Panthers put the game away early. Wessels and freshman Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) found the floor on consecutive point and Riley closed out the sweep with her third kill of the set.
By the Numbers:
  • Ryan paced all players with eight kills to hit .636.
  • Wessels had four kills in four attempts, while graduate student Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.), graduate student Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.), Sanderson and Riley all posted at least three kills without an error.
  • Emerson recorded a match-best 12 assists and added three aces.
  • Hampton had five aces, while junior Veronika Castro Rodriguez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) added four.
  • Plymouth State's .500 attack percentage was its highest since hitting at a .513 clip against Eastern Connecticut State last October.
  • The Panthers' 19 aces were the most since posting 22 in a sweep of VTSU Lyndon last fall.
