PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore
Drea Oswell (Stafford Springs, Conn.) made six saves, but Rhode Island College got past Plymouth State University, 3-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer match at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
PSU had an early chance to get on the board, but a shot from the top of the 18 was deflected by a Rhode Island College defender and the Anchorwomen would counter with the game's first goal in the 12th minute.
The Panthers had another chance ten minutes later but a diving stop by the RIC goalkeeper kept PSU off the board and the hosts would double the margin in the 34th minute to carry a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Rhode Island College took over in the second half, limiting scoring chances for the Panthers while tacking on a third goal to account for the final score.
Plymouth State moves to 3-5-0 (0-2-0 LEC), while the Anchorwomen go to 6-4-0 (1-1-0 LEC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, RIC 3
- Plymouth State (3-5-0, 0-2-0 LEC)
- RIC (6-4-0, 1-1-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
- The Panthers had an early chance less than five minutes in after some quick passes in the box led to a shot by junior Olivia Howard (Berwick, Maine) from the top of the box, but her attempt was deflected wide by the RIC defense.
- A RIC counterattack led to a breakaway down the right side, but Oswell easily handled the attempt.
- The Anchorwomen got on the board in the 12th minute after a turnover at midfield. Two quick passes led to a forward coming in alone and her shot from the right side just skipped out of the reach of Oswell, off the left post and in for a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Ella Fraser (Nottingham, N.H.) picked off a pass off a goal kick and connected with junior Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) ten minutes later. Bellmore found senior Tindra Bergstrand (Taby, Sweden) on the right side, but the RIC goalkeeper made a diving stop on her bid to the far post.
- RIC doubled the margin in the 34th minute when a perfectly delivered strike from the corner of the box found the top right corner and the Anchorwomen would maintain the 2-0 lead into halftime.
- The hosts controlled play throughout the second half, tacking on a third goal in the 65th minute and the Panthers were unable to rally.
By the Numbers:
- Oswell finished with six saves in the setback.
- Fraser led the Panthers with three shots.
- Rhode Island College held a 21-12 advantage in shots (9-6 in shots on goal) and limited the Panthers to just one shot in the second half.
