PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Sofia Orama (Marlborough, Conn.) picked up a win at No. 6 singles, but Plymouth State University dropped its season opener to the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Little East Conference (LEC) preseason favorites, in women's tennis action at the Holderness School Courts on Saturday.
The Beacons swept doubles play, though junior
Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) and senior
Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) put up a valiant effort at No. 2, coming up just short in an 8-6 setback. Orama picked up a straight sets win at No. 6 singles, while Cardoso claimed victory at No. 4 singles when her opponent was forced to retire due to injury.
Plymouth State starts its season at 0-1 (0-1 LEC), while the Beacons open the year 1-0 (1-0 LEC).

How it Happened:
- Craigie and Cardoso battled at No. 2 pairs, but were unable to hold off their counterparts in an 8-6 decision.
- Orama paired with sophomore Maddie Lorenz (Jefferson, N.H.) at No. 3 doubles, falling by an 8-2 score.
- Senior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) put up a strong fight in the second set, ultimately succumbing to her opponent 6-0, 6-4.
- Cardoso secured the Panthers' first point at No. 4 singles when her opponent was unable to continue the match.
- Orama fared well at No. 6, with a strong 6-4, 6-3 win, while Lorenz picked up three games in a setback at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1).
By the Numbers:
- Plymouth State holds a 17-7 advantage in the all-time series going back to 2001, though the Beacons have won the last three meetings.
- Lorenz was appearing in her first collegiate competition.
